MUSICAL CULTURE
THE CLASSICAL ATMOSPHERE YEHUDI MENUHIN'S VIEWS (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 23. " However great one's musical ability may be it is essential that one should live in a country where classical music is produced to absorb an atmosphere that may convert talent into genius." That is the opinion of Yehudi Menuhin, world-famed violinist, who is a through passenger by the Monterey from Sydney to the United States. Menuhin said America was fortunate because so many of the great artists of the world were seeking sanctuary there. Their influence should make a mark on the musical development of America. He said the peoples of New Zealand and Australia did not lag behind America in most things, but as far as music was concerned they were at a disadvantage unless they could spend some time in the countries where music was produced. Menuhin said that he and his wife had spent a delightful month's holiday with his brother-in-law in the country, and carried away pleasant memories of Australia. He gave 11 concert recitals in Australia.
