BRITISH CHILDREN

NEED FOR ACCOMMODATION LARGER NUMBERS DUE The Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) states that a reasonably good response has been received from the people of Otago to the appeal for homes for evacuiged British children. Small numbers had arrived, Mr Allen said, but these had mostly come under arrangement, and had gone into private homes. There would shortly arrive in Dunedin, however, larger numbers, and, that being so, he would like the people here to let him know if they desired to take children, so that when the children arrived adequate accommodation would be waiting for them. Those who offered to take British children must be prepared to care for them for the duration of the war at their own expense. It may be added that these children should preferably be called "British children," and not "Little Britons." HOMES FOR CHILDREN ARRANGEMENTS FOR PLACING (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 23. Recent despatches received by the Government indicated that there had been no variation in the decision of the British authorities to send a number of children to New Zealand, said the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr W. E. Parry, tonight. Very complete arrangements had been made for the reception and satisfactory placing of any who were sent to the Dominion, he added. Nominations of children by relatives in New Zealand were still being received, as were offers to take any child allotted, Mr Parry said. The sympathy and patriotism that New Zealand mothers had extended to the mothers of England was particularly touching and was warmly appreciated.
