CITY POLICE COURT

Monday, September 23 (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) Drunkenness Charged with drunkenness, a first offender was fined 2s 6d, in default 24 hours* imprisonment. Horse Driver Fined "The last I remember was being in an hotel, and after that everything was a complete blank," was the explanation given by Cedric William Kay when he appeared on a charge of being drunk while in charge of a horse and cart. —The defendant, Sergeant Johnsen told the court, had agreed to drive a horse and sulky from the city to Leith Valley, but on the way he visited two hotels, and when observed by the police he had no control over the horse whatever. —The defendant was fined £2 2s 6d, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Friends Fall Out Albert John McGee Guyton, who was represented by Mr O. G. Stevens, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault. —Outlining the charge, Sergeant Johnsen explained that on Saturday evening the defendant had struck the complainant a severe blow on the mouth, giving as his reason for the act that he wished to keep the complainant quiet. The complainant was under the influence of liquor, but the defendant was sober. —Mr Stevens said that the case was not, as might be supposed, one of unprovoked assault. Actually the pair were fast friends, and, seeing that the complainant was getting out of hand, the defendant struck him to try to bring him to his senses.—The defendant was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence any time if called on within 12 months. Maintenance Charged with disobedience of a maintenance order, Eric Wharton Braithwaite was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended conditional on his paying £3 on or before October 2, and £2 10s fortnightly after that date until the arrears (£55 15s) are discharged.
