The monthly meeting of the Palmerton Institute was held on Thursday last. Mrs Pagel presiding. The motto was "A bird in the hand in worth two in the bush." and the roll call "Cure for sunburn." Mrs Pringle was elected delegate to attend the half-yearly meeting of the Mid-Otago Federation to be held at Naseby in October Miss Martin gave an interesting talk on her travels abroad, especially in some of the war areas of to-day The competitions resulted: —Sponge sandwich —Mrs Stevenson 1, Mrs Cowan 2. Mrs Rhodes 3: wood-pulp flowers—Mrs Park 1; bloom—Mrs Watt 1. The hostesses were Mesdames Park, Cowan. Misses Diack. Pagel.

The September meeting of the Roxburgh Institute was presided over by Mrs Waters. The motto was. "It is good to be' a great woman but greater to be a good woman." and the roll call. "A proverb." Mrs Mercer was elected delegate to the half-veariv conference at Naseby. Mrs W Craig, who was unavoidably absent, sent with sample work on the making of new stockings from old ones. Miss Gawn. the dental nurse, gave a helpful talk on the care of children's teeth, and was presented by Mrs Waters with a small bouquet. As the result of money collected, four soldiers' parcels were sent away. The competitions resulted:—lib butter—Mrs J. Scott 1, Mr s McKnight 2; nut loaf—Mrs J. Andrews 1. Mrs J Steele 2. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Pannett, Vernon. J. Andrews. J. Kinaston, and Miss A. Pannett. The afternoon concluded with a short community sing.

The monthlv meeting of the Kk/tangata Institute took place on Thursday afternoon, Mrs Petrie presiding and welcoming a new member. The motto, was "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," and the roll call, "Suggestions for the birthday part* to be held on October 12." It was decided that each member give Is towards patriotic funds; that £3 be forwarded to Mr Desmoulin's community sing for six Christmas parcels for soldiers; and that a parcel of goods be sent to the Dunedin Patriotic Centre. The competitions were conducted by Mesdames Wylie and Richardson. Sympathy was expressed with a member who is ill in hospital. During the month a social afternoon was held for two members who are leaving the district, each one being presented with a gift. The hostesses were Mesdames Neil, Water and Smith. A competition for a threeminute sponge resulted: —Mrs Hadler 1 Mrs Finch 2. « -Y- *

Mrs Sparks presided over the September meeting of the Waipiata Institute; when the motto was, "There is nothing so irresistibly contagious as good humour." and the roll call "An Irish joke or a potato recipe. Members contributed towards a soldiers parcel. Mrs George Mathias was appointed delegate to the Mid-Otago half-yearly council meeting. The competitions resulted:—Patchwork article —Miss A Roberts 1, Mrs F. Mathias 2; potato scones—Mrs F. Mathias 1. Mrs F. Johnstone 2. The hostesses were Medames L. and R. Tregonnmg and Miss Thompson.
