RACING AND TROTTING

GERALDINE MEETING PETERSHAM SUCCESSFUL HEARTH WINS AGAIN FINAL EVENT TO BLAZEALONG (From Our Special Reporter) GERALDINE, Sept. 22. The Geraldine Racing Club's meeting was concluded in fine weather and attracted a large attendance. In fact, the attendances at the meeting appeared to be the best ever seen on the course. The President's Handicap was a good betting race, and at the finish Petersham got a good run to win in convincing style from Swordstick, who did not have his chance improved by leaving the rails and coming round on the outside at the home turn. Passaform showed improvement by finishing on in third place, but Nightdress did not shape up to expectations based on his first day's form. Hearth followed up her success of the previous day by winning the Stewards Stakes Handicap, but she only caught Raceaway in the last couple of strides and won by a narrow margin. In the absence of Mr A. 3. Hastings. Mr J Bridges acted as starter, and got the various fields away from a fair line. During the day £16,049 10s went through the totalisator as against £11,397 10s last year. The total for the meeting amounted to £27,987, as against £19,271 10s last year. Always one of the leaders, he had his stablemate Footloose to keep him near the fence on the turn, and he then drew ahead. Amigo, who moved up behind them on the turn ran on better than the others for second, with a close finish between Nigger Boy Scree:) Star, and The Buzzer for third money Nigger Boy covered a lot ot extra ground in the running. The Buzzer finished strongly from the rear of the field Black Robe, ridden by an apprentice, was never in the picture, while Taurangi after being the first to begin, had drifted right back at the end of half a mile The Marton Handicap was run at d slow early pace and the order of the leaders did not change materially at any stage. Gaelic Song and Noble Fox making the pace, the latter pulling hard for a long way before settling down, with Winsome Lu always handy in third place on the rails. This was the order in which they came home, with Gaelic Song stalling off a hot challenge by Noble Fox. Siegmund was able to come into prominence early in the running due to the slow pace, but when it was cracked on over the last half he was left to it Meamea began to go back at .the half-mile, while Colonel Bogey was unable to do better than fifth Homily ran a fair race to finish fourth. Kilrobe In both her races at Geraldine Kilrobe started to drop back a long way from home. , Nightcatm When produced for the Stewards' Stakes Handicap, Nightcalm showed a retention of pace, but was not forward enough to see out a race. Hearth The Paladin filly Hearth scored on each day at Geraldine, but the opposition could not be considered particularly formidable. Combat One of the disappointments at Geraldine was Combat, who dropped out when challenged at the business end of his races. Dunedin Spring Meeting Nominations are due to-morrow for the Dunedin Jockey Club's spring meeting. Forfeits for the McLean Stakes and Dunedin Guineas are also due. Blazealong When Blazealong won the final event at Geraldine he paid over two score to his supporters. Last season Blazealong was placed three times in 16 starts. Great Night Strong support came for Great Night in the South Canterbury Champion Hack Handicap, but she failed to get amongst the money. Taxpayer As a result of his winning form at Rlccarton, support came for Taxpayer at Geraldine, but the best he could do was to gain a place. Airline The Surveyor colt Airline bore an improved appearance when racing last week, but found one a bit too good for him in each of his races. Toro Koura The Pink Coat gelding Toro Koura did not produce the brilliancy at Geraldine that made him a winner last season. He has been operated on for throat troubles since racing last season. Raceaway The Acre gelding Raceaway can travel fast when acting under a light weight, and Hearth only caught him in the last stride on the second day at Geraldine. Whiphand On his showing at Geraldine, Whiphand will have to improve considerably to justify his inclusion in a field for classic engagements. Route March A likely-looking colt among those produced in the Nursery Handicap on the second day at Avondale was Route March, a half-brother, by Vaals, to the good performer Royal Appellant and Royal Tray. Royal March, dam of Route March, is a full-sister to Queen March, by Lucullus from March, hence a member of a successful winning family. Route March appears more likely to make improvement than most of the others, and he should be seen to more advantage later on. He is trained by F. Smith for Mr S. J. Wood, owner of Proud Fox, whose effort among the sprinters at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting indicated that he is not likely to be long in returning to the winning list Jockey Returning Private advice has been received that the New Zealand jockey L. H. Clifford, who has been riding in South Africa during the past 12 months, is to return to Auckland shortly. Clifford has ridden with a good deal of success in South Africa, and it is not yet known whether he will return there later or remain in New Zealand. He will, however, probably apply for a licence as soon as he returns, and do some further riding in the Dominion. Cambria The Avondale Nursery Handicap winner Cambria is a very nice bay colt by Cambria Park from Recipio, but he was evidently not thought forward enough, arid paid the largest dividend of the meeting, over two score The breeder. Mr E. A Price, has bred from Recipio only every second year, and Cambria is the third of her progeny, the previous ones being the sprinters Bronwen, who won the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie, and Verulam, who recently made an auspicious debut by winning a double at New Plymouth Recipio is by Lucullus, whose daughters are doing very well at the stud, from Recoup, by Hierarch from Agatha, by Nelson, dual winner of the Auckland Cup. from Sister Agnes (imp.), by Rosicrucian. He made up ground quickly after the start, but after going a furlong Oasis fell and brought down Clive Brook. Manawai was also unlucky, as he had to be pulled up to avoid trouble, and then made up ground and finished second Haughty The Nelson Derby mare Haughty was made favourite for the Geraldine Trot, but started sixth choice for a place. Apparently her supporters went for a win only, and she won like a good bet. Haughty confirmed the good opinion formed about her, and won again when produced for the Orari Trot.

Hatrack Hatrack, who won on Saturday, started five times last year for a win, a second, two thirds and a fourth. His successful effort was at Gore in December, when from 72 yards behind he won the Mataura Handicap from Traveltone and Geelong in 4min 45sec from a 4min 58sec mark. At Forbury in January he was third to Judgment and Anna s Voyage in the Waverley Handicap of a mile and a-half, which he ran in 3min 35 4-ssec from 3min 38sec. In May he ran second to Great Mountain. On that occasion he registered 3min 33sec from 3min 36sec. Always Goes Well Franz Derby, a winner at Hutt Park on Saturday, seldom goes a bad race; but notwithstanding, she failed to win a race last year. Last year she contested 14 races, in four of which she was placed. One was at two miles and each of the others a mile and a-half. At Wellington in April she registered 3mln 20 2-ssec to finish second to Millisle in the Introductory Handicap. This year she has raced three times, finishing second to Big Kauri at Addington over two miles, which she ran in 4min 31 3-ssec from 4min 39sec RICGARTON NOTES SOME NEW HORSES (Special to Dailv Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 21. Messrs G. R. Hunter and P. C. Webb have a stud farm near Riccarton, and from a quartet of two-year-olds they will have some promising horses in training soon. Gunga Din is a chestnut colt a first foal, by Salmagundi from Coal Pit, by Cockpit from Gold Bound, the dam of Demagogue, Duo and Ilka. A bay filly by Irish Lancer is from the same family, her dam, Gold Pit, being a sister to Coal Pit Another Irish Lancer filly is from Sapient, the dam of Cocksure. The last of the quartet is a Myosotis filly. H r dam Pakitere, though a disappoinmg race mare, is a half sister to Toxeuma. a good class miler. There is also one foal on the farm, a well-grown colt by Solicitor General from Gold Pit. This mare developed trouble in one of her legs recently, and she was destroyed The two-year-olds have been broken in on the farm where they are being exercised regularly under the direction of Mr Hunter, and they will be well forward when they are put into regular training later in the season. ~, „„ Among the older horses running out on the Hunter and Webb farm is Patuma. He showed promise as a jumper when A. S Ellis had him in work last year, but he went wrong in the wind. He has been operated on, and he is in good health. The present intention is to send him back to training early in the New Year, to be got ready for another trial as a'jumper next winter. H and A. Cutts have several two-yeai-olds in work, and one of them may go to Wingatui for the McLean Stakes. The one in view for the trip is Full Pitch, a well-grown brown colt by Cricket Bat from Sailor's Love. He has not been seriously tried vet, but he shapes well. J. C. Tomkinson has five of his team in strong work—Lockit, Synthetic, Atreus, and a couple of two-year-olds, one by Foxbridge from Aureola, and the other by Paper Money from Kakara. So far their programme has not been definitely arranged. A good deal will depend on how the Foxbridge two-year-old shapes in the next fortnight. If she does well she may go to Trentham, in which case Lockit, Synthetic and Atreus may travel north also. As an alternative, South Canterbury, Rangiora, and Motukarara will provide racing for the team prior to Riccarton. The Paper Money two-year-old is backward.

Schoolgirl has not been seen on the tracks lately. She has had a rest since the Grand National meeting, but M. B. Edwards has her in useful work again at Yaldhurst. Probably she will have one race before the Riccarton carnival. Rebellion has been turned out for a spell, and it is not known when he will be brought in again. His stable mate, Dictate, is working well, and he is building up nicely. He should be in good fettle for the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, but he will probably have a race before then. NOKO IN WORK AGAIN BLISSFUL LADY INJURED (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 21. Heavy rain yesterday and throughout the night left the ■ tracks at Invercargill in a sodden condition this morning; The No. 2 grass track was open, but no fast work was done. The three-year-old Noko, by Sir Simper from Dark Marie, who was gelded on his return from an unsuccessful trip to Canterbury, has rejoined Mr W. E. Hazlett's team, and is in splendid order to resume a preparation. The four-year-old mare by Irish Lancer from Celerity II (dam of Boswell), has been named Princess Gainsborough. She has been in work for some yme, but has not been hurried, and at present she is troubled by a slight cold. Others to catch the complaint are Sailing Lady and Island Robin (Songbird—Silent Liffey). The Paper Money mare, Blissful Lady, was injured when playing in the paddock yesterday, and, although it is not expected to prove serious, it will be some weeks before she will be able to resume serious training, and she will be kept in her box for a few days. The horses were getting into the going at Riverton this .morning, and strong pace work was mostly the order of the proceedings. Spanish Lad and Desert Maid sprinted from the three in 42sec. The two-year-old had a slight advantage at the post, but Spanish Lad appeared to be doing it the better. The two-year-old Sing Sing and the Man's Pal—Set Sail filly, had solo sprints down the straight, and both moved well under a good hold. Southern Sail was doing it better than Peony Rose at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 43sec. the last four in lmin lsec. Kippen strode over six furlongs at strong three-quarter pace, and ran the last half mile in 57sec. Other horses to do useful work were Rodeur, Irish Ruler, and Boaform. Airdrie and Ballyaggan were sent over two of the pony fences a couple of times, and both gave a good exhibition, though there was no pace on. Dark Flight, Gold Flight, and Gay Flight were worked on the beach. KUROW HANDICAPS (Per United Press Association) TIMARU, Sept. 22.
