PORT CHALMERS NEWS

MAGISTRATE'S COURT A sitting of the Port Chalmers Court was held on Saturday before Mr W. J. Johnston. J.P.. and Mr R. D. Poison. J.P. John Phillip Berks, a seaman employed on an overseas vessel, was charged under the Shipping and Seamens Act with being absent from duty without leave. It was stated that the captain of the vessel had found the gangway unguarded and the defendant, had been assigned to guard duty. A fine of 10s was imposed. Frederick Basil Murray was charged with drunkenness, wilfully damaging a window and refusing to quit licensed nremises. On the first charge he was fined 10s and on the second was ordered to make good the damage (4s). The last charge was adjourned till October 25.
