OTAGO DEFEATS SOUTHLAND SENIOR AND JUNIOR MATCHES Southland's senior and junior representative hockey teams visited Dunedin at the week-end, and were defeated by the home sides, Otago winning the senior game by 4 goals to 3, and the junior match by 6 goals to 4. The grounds at the Oval were in excellent order on Saturday, and play in both matches was fast. The senior game was marked by the clever play of the Otago forward line, and the dogged persistence with which the Southland players defended their goal. Whenever Otago gained the circle the Southland players crowded in too, and if the first shot did not register the visitors were always able to smother subsequent efforts. Southland did not show the same finish as Otago, and long passing was frequent, which proved tiring. Otago showed the strain a little less than the visitors, but in the latter stages did not display the penetrating power which was evident in the first spell. The scoring was opened by White, centre-half, and before long Southland evened the scores with a neat shot by Davidson. Otago again got the lead, a good passing movement being finished off by Alldred. Alldred and Yule were again associated in a dash which ended with a good goal shot by the latter. Southland missed a couple of chances when Hennessey put in a nice solo run to Otago's circle and Spiers missed an open goal through hitting high. In the second spell there was less incident. Hennessey added to Southland's score, and Ryburn scored for Otago. The Southland players were tiring. Neither side was playing well in the circle. Southland missing one or two chances. Both goalies were proving very sound, and were getting a good deal of work to do. The game was nearing its end when Southland's last score was registered, Seminens putting the ball in the net from a scramble on the goal line The game ended:— Otatco 4 goals. Southland 3 goals. Messrs W. Gregg (Southland) and H. Sew Hoy were umpires. Junior Match Southland held a lead for a good period in the junior match, but in the second half Otago improved, the game ending : Otago 6 goals. Southland 4 goals. Dr B. Monheimer and Mr H. Pickup were umpires. The teams were entertained at dinner after the matches. The Southland players left on their return last evening.
