QUEEN CARNIVAL

NUMEROUS ATTRACTIONS MOCK COURT TO-DAY COPPER TRAIL A FEATURE There are many attractions ahead for the queen carnival to raise funds for the rehabilitation of soldiers. What with ugly .men contests, mock courts, and “hobo” balls, the round. of fun should meet all tastes. The principal attraction to-day will be the mock court at the corner of Dowling and .Princes streets. This event ha s been organised by the Commercial Travellers’ Association. There will also be a community sing at the Strand Theatre, when the Army Queen will be in attendance. There will be a copper trail, too. to urge citizens to Sssist the good cause.' It will start at Manse s reet. Eight yards of coppers, it should be noted, make £l. To-night and to-morrow night the Casino will be open. To-morrow morning the students will conduct a street appeal, and it is said that they have many surprises in store. Rugby at Carisbrook To-morrow afternoon a. Public Service gala will be staged at Carisbrook. all the proceeds being devoted to the Army Queen. Three Rugby fixtures will be played, nrimary schools’ teams meeting at 1.15 and a Maori team playing a jockeys side at 2.15. At 3.15 the feature game will be played, when Public Service will meet University A. For this match Queen Airini will Kich off. The Dunedin Highland Pipe Barm the Kaikcrai Band and the Kaikorai School Bugle Band will be in attendance. A limited number of admission tickets to Carisbrook will be on sale to-day and to-morrow morning. These will include a luckv ticket worth s valuable prize. . On Sunday the St. Kilda Band will play in the Gardens, the proceeds being devoted to the Army and Navy QueensOn Wednesday there will be a " hobo ” ball in the Town Hall. This promises to be a success financially* fo< tickets are selling well. Port Chalmers is doing its bit towards the raising of funds, and on Thursday evening a victory ball is to be held in the Port Chalmers Town Hall. ’ Historic Documents An interesting document 'which has been given to the Air Force Queen Committee is a letter written by the Duke of Wellington, and dated November 20, 1791. This will be auctioned to assist the funds. Another letter written by Queen Alexandra,* and r Vted June 23, 1917. has also been presented for auction. Another attractive programme has been arranged for the Army Queen dance in the Main Town Hall to-mor-row night, and as a special attraction an apple derby contest will be heid between a Maori tean and a jockey team. The music will be supplied by Mat de Laney’s Radio Rhythmics, and the vocalists will be Miss Daphne Jordan and Messrs Jimmy McFarlane and Arthur Waller. Spectators will be admi'ted to the circle for a small charge Reserves are at Begg’s. Auction Sale The Navy Queen Committee is organising a monster auction sale of furniture and effects. AIR FORCE QUEEN ITINERARY FOR TOUR The following itinerary has been arranged for the tour of the Air Force queen. Miss Mary Pratt: — ’ To-night.—Concert at Queenstown (week-end to be spent there). Tuesday.—Concert at Cromwell. Wednesday—Concert at Alexandra. Thursday.—Ball at Clyde. Friday.—Ball at Ranfurly. Saturday.—Afternoon function at Patearoa. A large audience welcomed Miss Pratt and party to Hampden on Wednesday evening, when the Mayor (Mr W. H. Murcott) received the queen on behalf of those present. A posy of flowers was presented to .Miss PraW by Miss Dunbar, after which an excellent programme was provided. Of the official party, Miss Margaret Pratt and Miss Doris Wilson sang and Miss Alwyn Nichol (Counters of Waikouaiti) gave a recitation. Supper and a dance completed a very successful evening. Palmerston's Campaign A large and enthusiastic meeting was held at Palmerston to further the campaign for the Air Force queen. Over £IOO was raised in the first week of the campaign.' The next event is the Pipe Band dance, to be held on September 25 in Mr D. Ross's barn at Terrace Farm. The Pipe Bano Committee ha s all arrangements well in hand. On September 28. Dunedin Police football team is to play the Eastern District representatives on the Show Ground at 3*30 p.m. From 1.30 until 3.30 a varied programme of sporting and novelty events is to be carried out. and the Palmerston Gun Club is holding a shoot on the adjoining paddock at the same hour. The shoot is to be an open event A bottle drive is to be conducteo throughout the district, and donors of bottles are asked to give their bottles to stores, carts, butchers, bakers or carriers for delivery to the depot in Mr J J. Hoggie’s yard. ,
