Ministerial The Minister of Education, Mr H G. R. Mason, left for the south yesterday after inspecting the work of the Dunedin intermediate schools and tne Home Science School. The Leader of „ the Opposition Mr Adam Hamilton was a through passenger by the south express yesterday afternoon. v Mr C M. Bruce left for Wellington by the through express yesterday. Messrs James Begg and A S. Holms. Waimahaka, were passengers by tne express yesterdav for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Meal Board. Squadron-leader F, R Dix has been granted a permanent commission in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, ihe appointment was gazetted last night. At the annual meeting last night of the Otago High School Old Boys Cricket Club a tribute was paid to the valuable service given to cricket in Otago over many years by Mr J. M Fraser whose death occurred recently. Miss Edith Evans, of North-East Valley elder daughter of Mr and Mrs I. J. Evans, of Broad Bay. is now managing a Royal Air Force canteen “ somewhere in England.”
Major E. H. Whiting has been attached to Army Headquarters in Wellington for duty as publicity officer, and has ceased to be seconded to the Central Military District headquarters for similar duty
MV R Macdonald, of Waikuku and Mr D. R. Ogilvy. of Fpxton. have been appointed members of the Flax Plan Industrial Committee in place of Mr A G Long and Mr B. B. Wood, who have resigned. These changes in the committee were gazetted last night. The following passengers left by plane for the north yesterday:—Mr R. Stewart Glendining for Christchurch Miss I. Turnbull for New Plymouth Mrs H. Brown and infant for Auckland, Mr C. L. Calvert. Mr W. D. Weymouth and Mr L, T. Bishop for Wellington. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were Mr H. Speight and Master M. Hooker from Wellington and Mr R Laidlaw from Christchurch.
At the annual meeting of the Kiwi Swimming Club last night opportunity was taken to make presentations on behalf of the members to Mr S Brown a patron and a former president of the club, and to Mr H A. Newall. a vicepresident. in recognition of their services to the club over a long period of years. The gifts were handed over by the president (Mr D. Watson), and Mr E. C. Isaacs, secretary of the club, who spoke in eulogistic terms of the helpful manner in which both Mr Brown and Mr Newall had always supported the clut.
