RACING AND TROTTING

GERALDINE MEETING CUP TO NIGHTDRESS HEARTH WINS SPRINT A DOUBLE TO HAUGHTY <Special ro Daily Times) TIMARU. Sept. 19. The Geraldine meeting opened in favourable weather, and a very large ittendance witnessed the racing. Recollection outclassed the opposition in the Hurdle Race, and although Al! Night lost ground in a bad start in t'he Ohapi Handicap he got up to win. Nightdress won the Geraldine Cup in good style, but with a better run both Glenora Boy and Rov Bun would have troubled the winner. Halt, the winner of the Raukapuka Handicap, paid around half a century, and Hearth proved rather too good for the opposition in the Squatters' Handicap Iceland Spar stayed on rather too well for the opposition in the Belfleld Handicap. Prince Plato is a chestnut by Plato from Wahine Nm, and will carry the colours of Mr A. McMulllan. A Marton Candidate

Colonel Bogey Is sure to touch a short price if he contests the Marton Handicap, as he was a good thing beaten on the second day of the Wanganui meeting. He handles soft going well, and probably the conditions will be to his liking on Saturday. Avondale Winner

Aguila, who finished brilliantly to win the Trial Plate at Avondale, is a four-year-old by Bronze Eagle—Exactly, and comes from a successful winning family. Aguila is a well-grown gelding who scored in his second outing, and he should do further service for trainer A. Winder. Kindergarten

The three-year-old Kindergarten appeared a trifle unlucky when he ran third in the Henderson Handicap at Avondale. He came from a long way back, and left the impression that he would take a lot of beating next time out. He is a wellgrown colt by Kincardine —Valadore, and is trained by I. Tinsley at Gisborne. Bayadeer

If Bayadeer draws a good marble she might be hard to beat in the Juvenile Handicap at Marton this week-end. Though she was unplaced in the Wanganui Debutant Stakes, she- showed a lot of speed from an outside barrier position. Bayadeer is by Phaleron Bay from Bayloch. an Imported mare by Baydrop from Longdendale. by Sunflower 11. Dividend

Dividend has been given a fairly easy time by T, H. Gillett. He raced well at Riccarton, winning the Jumpers Flat and being the runner-up to Esperance Bay in the Sydenham Hurdles. Dividend will probably be given a run at Rangiora or Motukarara to fit him for the hurdle races at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Last season he won the Rangiora Handicap. Beaulivre

It will occasion no surprise if Beaulivre misses the Hill Stakes at the Red Cross meeting at Randwlck on Saturday. He would have to carry a penalty of 71b, and would be the only horse in the race so treated. He has had a fair amount of racing, and there are plenty of standard weight-for-age races for him in the next two months. Princess Minerva

D. Cotton has taken Princess Minerva in hand again. In some of her races Princess Minerva shaped as though she wouid develop into a useful staying hack, but she did not come up to expectations. She is a four-year-old brown mare by Nightmarch and the last foal from the All Red mare Red Queen, dam of Master Clarence and Studley Royal. ,

Starting Point Improved The seven-furlong starting point at the Orari course is so situated that it makes the starter’s work look indifferent, but the position is a great improvement on that existing two or three years ago. Instead of starting on the worst part of the bend, the horses line up at a point which gives a straighter run to the six-furlong post. The result is that an outside marble no longer wrecks a horse’s chance. Dorla Very Well

Dorla has not been set any stiff tasks since her winning effort in the Paparua Handicap on the first day of the Grand National meeting. She is very well, and on the form shown by the other three-year-olds so far this season she will again prove hard to beat in the Dunedin Guineas next month. Membership Abused

Though 12 months ago he had been able to congratulate members on the assistance they had given in reducing congestion in the members’ enclosure, Mr b. L Riddiford mentioned in his presidential address to the annual general meeting m the Wellington Racing Club that unfortunately during the past year certain members had again become very Numerous local residents who were not members of the club had been observed in the enclosure, some even wearing other members' seasonal badges If this abuse continued, Mr Riddiford said, then it would become necessary for the stewards to demand an explanation from .the offending members, He therefore wished to draw attention to the resolution that was passed . two years ago. That no additional badges for the members enclosure be sold or issued to members for residents of Wellington.” TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES September 21.— Wellington T.C. Among the Favourites Vain Lad, who is on the front in the Nai Nai Handicap al Hutt Park, is one of F. J. Smith's team, and that fact will probably place him among the favourites. From Te Rapa Stable Neutrality, a fivo-year-old by Jack Potts from Lily Bingen, is a smart pacer from M. Stewart's stable at Te Rapa. He looks nicely placed in the Sharpe Handicap tomorrow. By Jack Potts My Ladv Luck, who is trained by J. Fraser, jun„ is by Jack Potts from that fine race mare Free Advice, Wellington Stakes There is little doubt that Special Force will be favourite for the Wellington Stakes, but there are many good judges who are of the opinion that Surprise Potts will go a good race.

Has the Pace Siege Gun, who is now in L. A. Maidens’s team, has the pace to win the Railway Handicap to-morrow if he does it right from the start. Parauri According to northern reports Parauri is very well at present and should be worth following at Hutt Park. Worth Remembering Lady Carol put in some telling work in the last half-mile of the Pacific Handicap at New Brighton. She was not in the first 10 at that stage, and finished close up fourth, only about a neck behind the third horse, King's Jubilee. VIKING AS HURDLER A FINE SCHOOLING EFFORT (Special ro Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 19. Trainers had the use of the No. 1 grass track at Invercargill this morning, but there was little fast work done. The going was lifting, but was drying up fast under a strong wind. * Milford and Sparkle did a round at a strong pace, and came home from the half in 55 2-ssec. Both are doing well, and Sparkle is to make her 'next appearance at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting. , . , Heidelberg was restricted to pace work and an easy four which took 59 l-ssec. The Lord Warden gelding is well forward, and is likely to have a race at the Dunedin spring meeting, Erin’s Star and the four-year-old mare by Colonel Cygnus from Wild Erin shaped well when running five furlongs in Imin 9 3-ssec, the last four in 56sec. The Colonel Cygnus mare could have improved considerably on the time, being a bold galloper, with plenty of speed. She is a half-sister to the defunct Wild Irishman, who had a most promising career as a hurdler cut short when he received fatal injuries in a race at the 1938 Grand National meeting. She has been schooled over hurdles and big fences, and is a most dashing jumper. Eire’s Ruin and Colonel Rouge pleased by the manner in which they left four furlongs behind in 54 3-ssec. The three-year-old gelding by Nigger Minstrel from Morse Signal and Sir Denis ran five furlongs in Imin lOsec, the last four in 55 3-ssec The Nigger Minstrel gelding finished very well, and he is going to be well forward for the early spring meetings.- He will probably make his debut at Gore next month. There was a fairly strong nor’-wester blowing at Riverton, and the going was lifting. All the fast work was done on the course proper 35 feet out from the rails. , . Southern Sail ran sever) furlongs in Imin 38sec, the last four in 56sec, time that she could have bettered as she was doing it fairly easy over the concluding stages. Peony Rose continues to work well. She was under a nice hold throughout seven furlongs in Imin 37sec. the last four in 56sec.

The McLean Stakes candidate Gay Flight, who is looking very .well, was let off with two sprints down the straight. Gold Sequin (Paper Money—Gold Silk) was doing it slightly better than Desert Maid at the finish of three furlongs In 40sec, The Man's Pal—Set Sail filly covered the same distance in 40sec. and did it comfortably. Gold Flight left the six under a strong hold, taking Imin 25sec for the full distance, the last four in 55sec and the three in 40sec. She was only shaken up over the last 100 yards. Sing Sing took 57sec to run four furlongs, the last three in 43sec. This filly is making quite good progress in her preparation for the McLean Stakes Dark Flight was restricted to an easy six in Imin 25sec, the last three in 42sec. He was only moved on over the last halffurlong. J. Thistleton was very pleased with a schooling effort put up by Viking this morning. The Lord Warden gelding took four of the pony hurdles in brilliant stylo and with the pace on He jumped the hurdles with plenty to spare, and gave the impression that be would not find the steeplechase fences ahy bother. Mr W. E. Hazlett suffered a severe loss this week when the brood mare Direct Hit, and a Sir Simper colt at foot, both died in the paddock. Direct Hit was the dam of Shillelagh Wood (second in the

Grand National Steeples), Ballybrlt, and Lochcoribb, and was 22 years old. Mr Hazlett has a nicely-grown two-year-old chestnut colt by Salmagundi from Direct Hit in work at Invercargill. Colds are spreading at Invercargill, ana three of J. A. Howland’s team, including the three-year-old gelding by Nigger Minstrel from Queen Balboa, have caught the complaint, and are on the easy list. RICCARTON NOTES A. QUIET MORNING (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH. Sept. 19. With many of the horses away at the Geraldine meeting, there was not much excitement on the Riccarton tracks this morning. Some horses who are to race at later meetings were out, but there was not much in the way of serious trials, as there “was a shortage also of riders Royal Chief looks an improved horse after his race at Ashburton. He is bowling along freely in his work, and he should be ready to make a good showing on the second day of the Dunedin meeting where F. D Jones hopes to give him a race. After that, he should be at his best for Trentham, where the Harcourt Stakes will provide him with a great chance, at weight-for-age. over a mile and a-quarter. He is likely to play a prominent part in the New Zealand Cup. Sovereign Lady ran a good race when she just missed a place at Ashburton. She may make a trip south for the Dunedin meeting, as a mate for Muffler, though the Ashburton form of this three-vear-old was disappointing. Winning Rival has been enjoying 'an easy time for a few days, following her win at Ashburton, but she will be in strong work again soon, in preparation for a visit to Wingatui. T H. Gillett has Doria looking very well, and she is the prime fancy here at present for the Dunedin Guineas. With her brilliant speed she is likely to play a leading part in important sprints, and already she is being discussed freely as a Stewards’ Handicap candidate. Aggravate was cast in his box one night this week, and as he was sore, H. Nurse decided not to run him in the Hurdle Race at the Geraldine meeting dayA number of fresh horses from hen* will be seen on the second day of the Geraldine meeting. Among those likely to go are Leopardstown, Portadown. Royal Lancer, and Captain Bruce. F A. Roberts has Capricious in strong work, and a few fast gallops should see her in fair order for the Dunedin meeting. A couple of two-year-olds may accompany her to Wingatui. They are the filly by Theio from Queen Salute and the filly by Iliad from Lady Burleigh, dam of Nightbeam. They are a pair of smart gallopers. ... Mr D. Spence has Astronorper back at the track, and as he has done a lot of road exercise, it should not take long to get the big Night Raid gelding into racing condition / Sunnyland broke down near the close of the Hurdle Race at Ashburton, at a stage when he was going very well. F. Christmas has sent him home, and it looks doubtful if he will race again. Wagner looked in a bad way after he broke down in a recent gallop, and as hiS prospect of standing* another preparation did not appeal to him, Mr D. O. Rutherford gave the Siegfried gelding away. TAPANUI RACING CLUB APPLICATION REFUSED (Special ro Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Sepl. 19 The Racing Conference Executive has refused the application of the Hororata Racing Club to hold its meeting at Riccarton. and that of the Tapanui F.scing Club in race at Wingatui. The Ashburton County Racing Club has been refused permission for a change of date to the King's Birthday. Mondav. November 25, and will race on' the original date, Saturday. November 30. thus avoiding a clash with the Forbury Park Trotting Club.
