GERALDINE MEETING
THE FIELDS FOR TO-DAY The Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting will be opened to-day and will no doubt draw good patronage. The card contains satisfactory fields and should produce some interesting racing. At his best Recollection would be entitled to start favourite for the Hurdle Handicap, and All Night, Wild Coon and Safelight hold the best credentials of those engaged in the Ohapi Hack Handicap. Form at the Ashburton meeting suggests that Roy Bun and Glenora Boy will be most in demand for the Geraldine Cup. and Swordstick may show sufficient improvement to be regarded as the best of the others, although Nightdress, in a racing mood, would be hard to beat, and so would Combat if allowed to run his own race out in front. Taxpayer will probably start favourite for the Raukapuka Handicap, and Kilrobe would be hard to beat in the Squatters' Handicap if she behaved herself at the barrier. RICCARTON HORSES Opecial ro Uailv Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 18. Thirty-six horses rem Riccarton will be racing on the first day of the Geraldine meeting, among them being 22 who were seen at Ashburton last Saturday. Recollection has not won a race for more than a year, and in his latest start, at the Grand National meeting, he lost his rider at the first obstacle. He came back recently, however, from a long spell, and he has worked well enough to suggest early success. A minor ailment prevented Waka from racing at Ashburton, and he has not impressed in his last two Aggravate has had a lot of education lately over the pony hurdles, but he is an uncertain jumper. Donadea has shaped well in some of his schooling, but lack of race experience will be against him. Jewish Lad went well for a long way at Ashburton, but did not stay, while in the same race Courtyard. Top Rank, and Land Raid ran badly. All Night, second to Augment last month at Riccarton. has sprinted well since then, and he will be a strong favourite for the Ohapi Hack Handicap. Richelieu Pearl and Camphor have done nothing of note in recent work. Wild Coon must have a chance on his form at Ashburton, where Cesarina made no showing. Several of the Geraldine Cup horses raced well at Ashburton. Roy Bun won impressively over seven furlongs, and only needs to repeat that form to have a great chance. The course suits him, as he won the Cup last year. Night Hawk was second to Roy Bun at, Ashburton, and he should be improved by the race. Glenora Boy, on his second to Winning Rival, looks a good prospect, as the journey will not trouble him. Night Dress ran a fair race at Ashburton, and a mile and a-quar-ter will suit him better than seven furlongs. The Wrecker has not shaped well lately. On his recent form, Raceaway will find seven furlongs too far in the Raukapuka Handicap; Cymric seems a much-improved horse since he returned to work after being gelded, and he will be hard to beat. Dinah Dhu, ran a creditable race at Ashburton, and will be hard to beat here. So will Blue Abbey, a promising young horse. The Vulture has speed, but docs not stay. Lady Magellan and Kilcato do not appeal, but Halt has been working very well. Rebel Star failed only at the end In his race at Ashburton, and with a furlong shorter to go he will be' hard to catch in the Squatters’ Handicap. Gay Parade did not jump out. at Ashburton, but has speed to be dangerous. Kilrobe only needs to repeat track form to be in the money, while Skyrena has no recent form.
Iceland Spar tailed to run on as well as usual at Ashburton, but he is capable of better than that effort, so he must have a chance. Great Night had every chance at Ashburton, and may not be favoured by the longer journey Grey Silk has not raced well lately. Ferriby was stopping at the end of seven furlongs at Ashburton. Whiphand has speed, but is unknown as a stayer. Dranoel is in great order, and looks certain to play his part well as his second to Prudent Prince at Ashburton was a good effort. This morning’s work at Riccarton was mainly useful pacing, but a few horses were given short sprints on the No. 6 track Wild Coon and Skyrena sprinted three furlongs smartly ■ Waka is sore, and he will not be a starter in the Hurdle Race to-morrow
