UNIVERSITY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING The Chancellor (Mr W. J Worrell* : presided over the monthly meeting yesterday of the Council of the-Uni-versity of Otago. Endowment Fund Grant The registrar of the University of New Zealand wrote stating that an amount of £1175 would shortly be forwarded as the Otago proportion of the National-Endowment Fund. Not less than £250 must be devoted to W.E.A tutorial classes. The letter was received and the ques--tion of distribution was referred to the Finance Committee. Salaries The Finance Committee considered the possibility and desirability of increasing the salary of the more poorly, oaid members of the staff to relieve them from additional taxation lately imposed.; It was resolved that the registrar report on the amount involved if a 5 per cent, increase were granted to all full-time members of the staff, receiving not more than £250, iv Dental Course The Combined Standing Committees reported having conferred with the Dean of the Dental Faculty regarding the request received by the council from the Dental Students' Association that a summer term be introduced as a support to the national war effort. The Dean expressed the view that the students' proposal would not assist the war effort in any way. and it was conseauently decided to recommend the council to make no change in the present term arrangements Chair of Home Science The registrar reported that he had reason to believe that the letters sent by him to the presidents of various Canadian universities regarding the Home Science Chair had been lost when the' Niagara was sunk. It was resolved that further letters be sent by air mail to the Canadian universities that offer home science teaching, and that the council be recommended to accept applications from Canada coming to hand not later than October 31, and if possible, even later provided the candidates cabled not later than October 31 that their applications had been forwarded.
