October 12. 14.—Auckland R.C October 17 19—Masterton R.C Winning Rival Winning Rival was nicely handicapped at Ashburton but had nothing to spare at the finish Clinch The Avondale Cup winner. Clinch, was got by Appellant from Marble Bell, by Marble Arch —Miss Winsome, by Soult. Rehandicapped Rehandicaps for the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting are as follows: Geraldine Cup: Roy Bun 51b: First Hurdles: Sir Frederick 101 b Baffles Baffles, the sire of Miss Baffles, the winner of the Avondale Stakes, was got by Blandford from Waffles, the dam of Manna. Baffles was sold as a yearling at 6000 guineas. Glenora Boy Glenora Boy, who ran second to Winning Rival at Ashburton, is a six-year-old gelding by Lord Warden from Full Swing, by Nassau, from Marsa. the dam of Nightmarch. Valcony One of the fastest sprinters to race in the Dominion in recent years was the Gascony—Valley Rose gelding Ben Brageie. who was sold to go to India, and it is Interesting to note that a two-year-old full sister to Ben Braggie will race this season under the name of Valcony False Impression It is strange how the idea persists in " foreign ” parts that the Ashburton track Is a small one. Actually there Is only one (Riccarton) in New Zealand that is bigger. There are two In Australia (Flemington and Morphetville, S.A.), which are about half a furlong greater in circumference. but the straights are considerably shorter than that at Ashburton.
Roy Bun A field of 16 went to the post last year for the Geraldine Cup, and Roy Bun 7.2 won from The Sandwichman 7.4 and Second Innings 8.10 in 2min 7sec. This year Roy Bun was re-handicapped to carry 8.0. Shikari
The poor display made by Shikari at Ashburton is doubly disappointing as it was hoped that he would make a strong candidate for the Dunedin Guineas. An analysis of the field against him shows that it could not b° considered strong. The betting indicated that Royal Chief, Willie Win, Passaform and Toura Koura were not fancied, but even so he could not finish in a place Improvement Tire mishap during the running of the steeplechase event at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s winter meeting prompted the club to widen the track from the straight entrance to some distance beyond the winning post. The outside fence has been moved back several yards, with a corresponding alteration in the fence separating the bircage from the course. The change was put to the test on Saturday, and there was no doubt about the work being welladvised. Lost Bloodstock
Prior to the occupation of France by the Germans the American breeder, A. B. Hancock, had made arrangements for the importation of Tourbillon, sire of Djebel, winner of the English Two Thousand. However, nothing has been heprd of Tourbillon since France’s surrender, and Hancock has now given up hope of ever seeing him. It is probable that Tourbillon, Djebel. and a fair proportion of France’s best horses will eventually be removed to Germany, if they are not already there. As Germany is reported to have continued racing throughout the war, additions to its thoroughbred stock will be welcomed. It is to be hoped England will eventually be in a position that will enable it to levy on the lot, if that procedure is considered desirable. Miss Bailies
After winning the Avondale Stakes. Miss Baffles was bought by Mr E. G. Brldgens, president of the Auckland Trotting Club, at SOOgns. Miss Baffles was got by Baffles from Tractrix, by Tractor—Gulzark, and cost 90gns at the Trentham sales. Qiilzark was got by Nautlform from Petrovna, a good winner In her day and got by Stepniak from Irene, a sister to Aileen. Both Irene and Aileen produced good winners, but cannot be traced in the Stud Book Royal Lancer When racing last season as a three-vear-old. Royal Lancer was second once and three times third in six starts. He won well at Ashburton, and on breeding may train on to win more races. He was got by Irish Lancer from Winsome Sister, by Some Boy ll—St. Regis, by Charlemagne ll—St. Regis, by Hotchkiss—St. Evelyn, by St. Leger—Lady Evelyn, by Perkin Warbeck from Pulchra, the ancestress of Multiform. Uniform, Cruciform, and other good winners.

RiCCARTON NOTES WINTRY CONDITIONS (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 16. There was another wintry change In the weather over the week-end. Light rain fell yesterday morning, light drizzling showers during the day leading up to a downpour last night. The rain had cleared off this morning, but a cold southerly wind made the conditions very unpleasant. It was a quiet morning at the course. The ploughed track, which was in use at the end ot last week, was out of action again, while the sand was heavy, with lot of water lying on it in parts. Only a few of the trainers took then teams to the course, and they did only light tasks, while most of the horses wengiven walking exercise on the roads As a result of wins at Ashburton, Hoy Bun lias been rehandicapped from 7.9 to 8.0 in the Geraldine Cup. while Sir Frederick has been raised from 9.5 to 10.0 m the First Hurdle Handicap Summer hours started oilicially this morning on the Riccarton tracks, and s few of the trainers will be out for galloping soon after 5 o’clock to-morrow Others, however, will wait a little longe> before they take on the early hours Astronomer, who has been on the easy list for some time, owing to Injuring himself in a fall, has done a lot of road exercise In the last week or two. and Mr D Spence expects to have h -n back on thv track soon. Nearly 20 norses from Riccarton have been nominated for the Kurow meeting, to be held at Oamaru next week. Among them will be the first of the Riccarton two-year-olds to race this season. This is Verlagia, a chestnut colt by Vermeer from the Chief Ruler mare Pelagia He has shown some speed, and he Is verv forward. Wardress has Deen off the scene tot the last week or two. She was in a‘bad way following a sudden attack of some Internal trouble. She made a mick response to treatment but she lost condi tion. Fortunately she is buildina up again, and Mrs J Campbell is hopeful that she will have the Lord Warden mare fit for racing at the Riccarton November carnival. She has an engagement in the New Zealand Cup, but she will be handicapped, so far as that event is concerned unless she is able to get some preliminary racing. She is doing only light exercise at present, but it Is probable she will slart soon on more serious tasks. The Sandwichman was taken in nand a tew weeks ago after a spell. Unfortunately he did not do well, so G. A. Withers turned him out again. He will be allowed to rest until early r.ext year, when he will resume work, probably to be tried for jumping races hext winter The Sandwichman has shown ability over hurdles, and It is a matter for regret that there should be a doubt about him standing a preparation GERALDINE ACCEPTANCES <Peb United Press Association) TIMARU, Sept. 16.
