RUGBY FOOTBALL NORTH OTAGO UNION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the North Otago Rugoy Union was held last -night, Mr M. F. Woodward (president) occupying the chair. The Excelsior Club was granted the use of No. 2 ground to play Star Third Grade (Timaru) on Saturday. Town Team The following Oamaru team has been ■elected to play Waimate Sub-union at the Show - Grounds on Saturday:—Fullback, S. F. Easton: three-quarters—G Reid, B. Robertson, G. AIR FORCE QUEEN FUND TICKETS FOR HOUSE RAFFLE ON SALE NEXT MONTH At a meeting yesterday morning ot the fat-lamb buyers, it was decided, at the request of the Mayor (Mr L. J. K. Familton), who presided, to distribute tickets for the house raffle in Dunedin to the secretaries of country branches of the Patriotic Society, the distribution to commence at the end of this month so as to allow the local Patriotic Gala Committee to push ahead the sales of tickets for the local raffle. The manager and staff of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand have consented to undertake the town sales. All proceeds from the raffle will go to the Air Force Queen Fund. BADMINTON OAMARU CLUB'S GAMES In the final match played between the club captain's team and the president s team, the latter team won by 14 games to 10. J. K. Familton) presided at a meeting of the Oamaru Emergency Precautions Committee yesterday morning. . „ ... . An offer from Mr W. M. Cooper (Kakanui) to give accommodation to evacuated children in buildings near Teschemakers, should the necessity arise, and also to provide wood and milk was noted, and Mr Cooper thanked. Mr R. K. Gardiner (county clerk) reported on the Waitaki County emergency scheme, and Dr R. S. J. Fitzgerald stated that arrangements for temporary hospitals at Kurow, Otekaike. and Teschemakers had been completed. Inspector Colville was asked to furnish to Mr A. Nuttall details of motor caravans in Oamaru w’hich could be used as mobile dressing stations. Mr G. T. Gillies wrote offering any assistance the committee might need, for which he was thanked, and the supply of gas masks to the decontamination squad was left in the hands of Mr J, H. Grenfell. RED CROSS SOCIETY HYGIENE EXAMINATIONS The following ’ candidates have been successful in passing the examination in hygiene which was held recently;—Mrs V. E. .Doran, Misses Isobel Bain. SHIPPING ACTIVITIES PORT OF OAMARU High Water.—September: 17: 2.53 a.m. and 3.13 p.m. • Coastal Movements The Karu is due on Saturday to load for Wellington, Nelson and New Plymouth, via Timaru and Lyttelton. The Wainui will load on Thursday for Wellington. Napier and Gisborne, via ports. The Waipiata is due about Saturday. September 28, for Wellington and Auckland. via Timaru and Lyttelton. ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN The Rainfall.—During the 24 hours preceding 9 a.m. on Saturday 14 points of rain were recorded by Mr William Forrester. Up' to 9 o’clock yesterday morning a further 6 points were recorded, making a total for the month of 1.72 in Awamoko’s Patriotic Effort.—A record number of players patronised the Awamoko euchre social in aid of the soldiers parcels fund. The-women’s prize was won by Mrs W. G. Johnston and the mens by Mr Lloyd Knight, whilst consolations went to Mrs Elder and Mr Stanley Knight. Oamaru Rotary Club—At the weekly luncheon of the Oamaru Rotary Club yesterday Rotarian W. Kinder read a very interesting collection of letters from his son on active service. The letters described the voyage to England of the second echelon. Including visits to Perth Capetown and Sierra Leone, and also camp life in England and the wonderful hospitality extended to trOops on leave in London. Rotarian H. F. Maude moved a. vote of thanks. Rotarian-president A. R Tait presided.

The Minister of Education (Mr H. G. R Mason) will visit Oamaru to-morrow, arriving at 10.30 a.m.. and leaving at noon. He will visit the Waitaki Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools. Mr G. M, Robertson of Boundary Creek, Pukeuri, left Oamaru last Wednesday for training with the Fleet Air Arm of the Navy: Residents of the Pukeuri district presented him with a razor, a money belt and notes, and a parcel of clothing from the Red Cross branch. The presentations were made by Mr H Easton (Pukeuri and Richmond 1 and Mr J Duncan (Hllderthorpe). Members of the Waitaki Electricpower Board staff also made a presentation of a wristlet watch to Mr Robertson, and expressed their good wishes for Iris safe return.
