FORT CHALMERS BOROUGH

i MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council was held last evening. The Deputy Mayor. Cr W. Leftwich. occupied the chair, and there were also present Crs L. G. Jack. N Macdonald, W. Meade, J. T. Knewslubb W. D. Sutherland E. H Cook, J. H. Williamson and J. Sansom. Reports On the recommendation of the Standing Committee it was decided to obtain a new exhauster for the gas works, the present stand-by plant having been found inadequate during a recent breakdown of the main plant. It was reported that two buildings had been erected in the borough without the necessary permits being issued, and it was agreed, on the recommendation of the Standing Committee, to serve notice upon the owners to demolish the buildings concerned The Standing Committee recommended the extension of a six-inch sewer in Harbour terrace at an estimated cost of £6O. A motion that the matter should be held over until next meeting, when the council’s financial position would be reviewed, was defeated and it was decided to commence the work on completion of the works now in hand. The report of the engineer. Mr F. J. Williams, dealing with work carried out in the borough during the past month, was adopted. Water Supply Cr Macdonald suggested that with continued dry weather the water supply at the reservoir might be expected to fall, and he was of the opinion that restrictions should be imposed at an early stage. It was stated that restrictions could be imposed at any time by the council’s officers and it was decided that, in the meantime, the residents of the borough should be asked to economise in the use of water.
