ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSO CIATION
Tlie annual meeting of the Otago Home Economics Association was presided over by Mrs Glue. The election of officers resulted in the appointment of Mrs John Wilson as president and of Mrs McConnell as vice-presi-dent. Annual Report The annual report was presented as follows:- . The association began its activities for 1940 with 15 active branches— Caversham, Craigleith, Glentui, Kaikorai, Mornington. Musselburgh Rise. North Dunedin, Opoho, Maia, Pine Hill, Signal Hill, St. Clair, St. Hilda, Tainui, Wakari. During May a new branch was formed at Half-way Bush
with Mrs Tweedie as president, bringing the total membership to 316.
One executive and six council meetings have been well attended. Mrs A. Wilson and Mrs Leary have been active representatives to the National Council of Women, and Mrs Glue has acted as delegate to the Citizens’ Day Nursery Committee. Mrs Glue, Mrs K. Cameron. and Miss Stevenson represent he O.H.E.A. on the Otago Women Territorial association, and have been earnest workers in its various activities
The members co-operated willingly in extending hospitality to the Women’s Division. Farmers' Union, at
their annual meeting, and were pleased to have an opportunity of meeting the country women. Five central lectures have been held in the Home Science Building. During July and August two food demonstrations by Miss Mac Gibbon were much appreciated. All the branches have carried out .individual programmes, as their reports will show.
The association is indebted to Professor Strong and her staff for their continued interest, as well as for the privilege of using the Home Science Building. The facilities of the A.C.E., which have been so much at the service of the members, also call for an expression of gratitude.
The financial position of the association is satisfactory, and the sura of £l9 12s has been given to special appeals. The Emergency Fund has been generously supported, and the sum of £ls has been spent on comforts for the forces. In addition to the knitting of wool from the Patriotic Association and from the Emergency Fund, which is controlled by Mrs Reilly and Mrs Dawson respectively, many parcels of garments have been handed in for the Red Cross and Navy. Address by Professor Strong Professor Strong, then gave an inspiring address on “ World Affairs.” Comparing the two remaining democratic countries, Britain and America, and their systems of Government, she spoke, on such problems as population, climate, soil, and the defence of the western hemisphere. In conclusion, she made a vehement appeal to members to beware of the degenerating effects of luxury and self-complacency and urged them by the exercise of selfdenial and industry to take their full share in the fight for freedom. Mrs John Wilson proposed a vote of thanks.
It was reported that all branches will be represented at the “ Dug-out ” in the Octagon on September 20, and will keep the stall well stocked on that date.
