WANAKA Emergency Precautions A public meeting was held in Wanaka recently for the purpose of setting up committees under the Government emergency precautions scheme, the chairman of the Wanaka Islands Domain Board (Mr W. A, Scaife) presiding. Mr W. Manson was -appointed controller for the scheme, and the following committees were set up:—Medical and Nursing, Dr Douglas and the local branch of the Red Cross Society; Fire, Law, and Order—local police constable and Messrs G. Burrows, J. McPherson, A. Wlnton, J, W. Hogan, T. Mills, and K. Davie; Transport and Communications—Messrs R. Scott.. D. H. Anderson. G. Burghess, J. Gardiner, D. Matheson, D. McLeod, and W. Anderson; Supply—Messrs R. Walker, J. Perrow, C. J. Ceilings, and three members of the local branch of the Lady Galway Guild; Accommodation—Messrs A. McKegg. T. Bridgentan, Miss G. After a very mild winter, Wanaka is experiencing an early spring, and fine weather prevailed throughout the school holidays. The lake is still particularly low, and the nights have been mild, with few frosts. The rainfall recorded at Wanaka for August was as follows, last year’s figures being given in parentheses:—Rainfall, .77m (2.28 in); number of rain days, 3 (5). .Golf Tournament
The annual tournament of the Wanaka Golf Club was held in fine weather, and was a success in every way. A dance was arranged for the final evening, and the trophies were presented by the president of the club, Mr P. H. Colllngs. Mr W. Shepherd (Dunedin) appealed to the visiting golfers to contribute 5s each as the first contributions to the Wanaka queen carnival fund, and the sum of £8 was collected in five minutes. To celebrate the changing of the name of Pembroke to Wanaka on September 1, a coffin was carried around the hall just before midnight, the pall-bearers being Messrs F. Collings, W. A. Scaife. R. Scott, and Dr Douglas. At midnight Mrs A. M. Douglas entered the hall with the “ newlyborn Wanaka" (Miss Joan Scaife). The second round of J. Rennie’s trophy and medal match was played on Saturday, and resulted as follows:—F. Jackson, sen., 93—18—65. F. Collings 83—12—71, J. Perrow 79—6—73, C. Collings 85—12—73, C. Ewing 98—25—73, A, Wlnton 96—23 73, R. Waldron 89—15—74. The L.G.U. Match results were as follows:—Mrs Anderson 90—19—71, Mrs Scaife 94—21—73, Miss Perrow 94—19—75, Mrs Morrow 100—82—77, Mrs Collings 9719 —78. Miss Habner 104—26—78, Mrs Waldron 102—23—79, Mrs McKegg 111—31 —80, Mrs G. T. Morris 97—14—83. CROMWELL A Dry Spell As an indication of the exceptionally dry nature of the present season, rain feil on only four days during the past month and on only two days in July. The following is the rainfall recorded for August:—l4th, 35 points: 17th, 10 points; 23rd, 10 points; 27th, 30 points;—total, 85 points. Jockey Club A general meeting of the Cromwell Jockey Club was held in the Council Chambers on Saturday night. There was a fair attendance of members, and the president, Mr R. H. Thomas, was in Hie chair. The principal business was the presenting of the financial statement. After a general discussion on the club’s position, it was generally agreed that this was quite satisfactory in present circumstances. It was decided to hold the annual meeting towards the end of November.
Fruit Crop Prospects With a continuance of present conditions, indications are for a good spring. In the opinion of leading orchardists fruit trees are considerably further advanced this season than is usual at this time of the year. This is due, no doubt, to the exceedingly mild conditions, and from present indications there are prospects or good crops of stone fruit. MIDDLEMARCH Bowling Club The annual meeting of the Mlddlemarch Bowling Club was held on Saturday evening, a good attendance of members being piesent. The election of officers for the coming season resulted as follows:—President, Mr G. McDonald: vice-president, Mr H. Jones; secretary, Mr J. McLennan: treasurer. Mr C. Polaschek; committee — Messrs Tisdall, Beattie, Buchan, McGregor, and Burgess.—lt was agreed to open tire green for the season on Labour Day. Plunket Society The bi-monthly meeting of the Middlemarch branch of the New Zealand Plunket Society was held last week. Two new members. Mrs J. A. Jones and Miss Wren, were added to the committee.— It was decided to postpone the proposed brlng-and-buy sale until after the Queen Carnival.—The treasurer reported that a satisfactory response had been received from the appeal made for funds, which has enabled the branch to continue the work in the district. •Obituary Mrs James Howell, who died recently at her home on the Gladbrook Settlement, was a well-known and highly-respected resident of the Strath-Taieri. Mrs Howell came to the district with her husband from Deep Stream some 20 years ago, soon after which she entered into the social activities of the district. She was one of the original members of the Middleman;!! branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, and continued an active member until Illness .overtook her some 12 months ago. She was a member' of the Anglican Church Committee and an ardent worker in church matters. Much of her energy was concentrated on assisting entertainments for school funds, and she was ever ready to help anything for the good of the district. She is survived by her husband, one son, and three daughters.
Soldiers’ Farewell A successful social was held on Wednesday evening to take farewell of W. Thomson and N. Somerville, who are leaving on active service. Mr F. M. Howell, of the Farewell and Reception Committee, wished the departing soldiers the best of luck and a safe return, and on behalf of the residents of the district presented each , with a wristlet watch. During the evening, vocal items were contributed by Mrs E. Cameron and Mr J. A. Jones, the accompanist being Mrs J. McMaster. The O.K. Orchestra and the local pipe band rendered suitable music.
