A MEAN ACT

THEFT FROM SOLDIER LABOURER SENTENCED s CPer United Press Association) AUCKLAND. Feb. 10. “It is a mean sort of thing to steal money belonging to soldiers going to the front,” said the magistrate (Mr C. R. Orr Walker) in the Police Court, in sentencing Frederick David Thompson, aged 21 years, a labourer, for theft of money at the Papakura military camp. Thompson pleaded guilty to stealing sums totalling £l9 odd. The police said he entered camp at Papakura on January 12 and was sent to the hospital on January 28 with ear trouble. He began to steal from soldiers’ clothing two days after entering camp, and was discharged from the miltary forces on February 13. In March, 1939, he was before the court charged with attempted arson, and was admitted to probation for two years. Thompson was ordered to be detained for reformative purposes for a period not exceeding 12 months.
