WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Report., of meeting*, of branches are requested but they should be furnished promptly, for the publication of reports that are not supplied within a week from the date of the, meeting cannot be promised.

Mrs R. Young presided over the February meeting of the Kyeburn Institute. The;motto was, “Nobody has ever become dizzy through doing too many good turns,” and the roll call, “Earliest recollection of my schooldays.”' The grandmothers of the district were present, and each was presented with a shoulder spray. The competitions resulted:— Bloom Mrs Helm 1; marmalade—Mrs Young 1, Mrs W. W. Pearson 2; jelly—Mrs W. W. Pearson 1; social half-hour photograph competition—Mrs Mathewson 1. Miss Eudly ' gave an interesting demonstration with flowers. The hostesses were Mrs Strode, Mrs W. Pearson, and Mrs Young.

Mrs xiadler presided at the meeting of the Kaitangata Institute on Thursday, last, The motto was, “Cheery people let weary people-forget their woes,” and the roll call, “Birthplace, description, etc.” Miss Morrisey was appointed delegate to the annual meeting at Balciutha, The competitions resulted;—Apricot jam—Mrs Finch 1, Mrs' Hadler 2; chutney—Mrs Finch 1, Williams 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Bowmar* Parker, and Proctor. Mrs Sutton demonstrated on the making of silk dressing table mats.

Mrs Chalmers presided at the monthly meeting of the Waiareka Institute. The motto was "How far that little candle throws its beams, so shines a good deed in a bad world,” The roll call was “A washing-day hint." The nostesses were Mesdames Youngman. H. Weir. J. Weir. Whittaker and Tomkins. The competitions resulted:— Print apron—Mrs Williams 1. Mrs Milne 2. Mrs Lauder 3; bloom—Miss M. Dewar 1, Mrs Milne 2, Miss B. Dewar, 3; jam—Mrs Watson 1. Mrs Williams 2.

The Macrae’s-Moonlight Institute held its first meeting for 1940 on Wednesday last, when Mrs Heffernan presided. The motto was “ Don't look at a kill, climb it.” and the roll call. ‘“Gardening hints.” A demonstration on the use of an art embroiderer was given by Mrs A. Peddie. The competition—slice of own Christmas cakeresulted:—Mrs J. Heffernan and Mrs A. Peddie (equal) 1, Mrs Hay 3, Mrs J. Elsom 4. Mrs Sutherland, in charge of the social half-hour, brought forth two amusing competitions. Mrs Elsom and Mrs Heffernan being the winners. The hostesses were Miss I. Roy and Miss T. O’Connell, assisted by Miss Ockwell.
