BALCLUTHA Cricket Matches for the South Otago Knockout Cup opened on Saturday. At Owaka, the game between Clutha A and Owaka was also a final for the Stewart Shield. Owing to previous rain, the wicket was somewhat “sticky,” and the resultant game was a poor scoring one, Owaka winning by 58 runs to 40. Clutha batted first, the only double-figure scores being Gormack 13, Keach 11. Bowling for Owaka, Brownlie took six wickets for 12 runs, Tabor two for 13, North one for two, McNutt one for three. In Owaka’s score of 58 the only doublefigure batsmen were McPhee 12, McNutt 10. L. Guest took two wickets for 17 runs. Green three for 16, Keach three for 10, Edwards one for 11. The result of the match means that Clutha A and Owaka are now equal in points for the shield, and a final will have to be played. . . Clutha B had a good win over Kaitangata in the Cup fixture played at Balclutha on Saturday. Kaitangata had first knock, and were all out for 73 (W. Parker 30, E. Stanaway 29). Bowling for Clutha, McGregor took seven wickets for 18 runs. Frepgley two for 27. P. Guest one for five. Clutha totalled 128 by good cricket (Baxter 26, Barron 25, Hill 22, A. Stewart 21 retired, Reid 13). Holden three for 31, Tripp three for four, Stanway one for 16, Carson one for seven, Garvin one for 24. No Volunteers

A farmer in for the sale on Friday said that there had not been a single volunteer, for the Special Force from among the young men in his district. Whether they were waiting for conscription or not he could not say. The speaker was a. returned soldier, who expressed himself in favour of conscription as the fairest system for all, provided the influence that secured exemption for many fit men in the last war was eliminated. Presentation Shoot The South Otago Gun Club held a shoot on its ground at North Balclutha on Saturday in honour of the president (Dr D. G. Radcliffe), who is leaving with the medical corps in the second echelon of the Special Force. Mr Gerald Sinclair took the opportunity at afternoon tea of presenting Dr Radcliffe with a solid silver cigarette case, and wished him the best of luck in the future. Mr S. F. Aburn and Mr G, E. Turner, of Dunedin, echoed the sentiments of goodwill expressed by the first speaker. In replying, Dr Radcliffe said he hoped it would not be long before he could return to enjoy his Saturday afternoon shoots with club members again. The shoot opened with / a six-bird eye-opener. Four tied with the possible, namely—W. R. Morland, C. Thomson, S. Geddes, and T. McKinlay. Nineteen participated in the main match, a 15-bird handicap, which resulted in C. Thomson and W. Morland being first equal each with a pos-

Miss Dorothy Vissen, of Helensbrook. who leaves the district shortly, was tendered a farewell social in the Masonic Hall on Saturday evening by residents of the district. The evening was pleasantly spent in songs, musical items and cards, and after supper Mr Hugh McFaul, on behalf of those present. made a presentation of a chiming clock to the departing guest, and expressed best wishes for her future welfare. Mr Winston Russell, of Circle Hill, was the victim of an accident, on Saturday morning. He had just commenced to open up a paddock of crops when the binder fell over a bank through slipping on the wet ground. Mr Russell was thrown clear, but suffered an injury to his left ankle. He was conveyed to Balclutha Hospital for X-ray examination, which revealed a fraqture of the ankle. Bowling

Two rinks from Milton Club journeyed to Warepa for the interclub fixture on Saturday and scored a decisive victory. Scores (Milton skips’ names first):—T. Clayton beat J. Mclntosh 28—10; G. Clark beat G. Stewart 26—13. Totals: Milton 54 points, Warepa 23 points. . In the Milton Club’s Senior Championship Singles, T. L. Floyd leads in section I with two wins, and in section II T. Clayton has completed his games for three wins and one loss. M. Davanney has two wins and a loss, with a game to play. U. Walker has two wins and one loss in section I of the junior championships, and H. Munro has two wins in section 11. Cricket

The opening games in the “Knockout” Cup Competition were played on Saturday. Milton Club’s A and B teams meeting. The B team batted first and scored 112 runs. J. Vidal topped the score with a valuable 24 not out. other good scores being contributed by W. Woods (22), H. Collings (21), E. Olver (18). W. Arbuckle (two for 10), H. Heads (two for 13), and J. Kerr .(three for 35) secured the wickets. The A team’s score was 124, the team thus winning by 12 runs. Kerr was the principal scorer, contributing 53 runs to the totah E. Donohue (15) and R. Weir (14) also batted well. A. Mudie took five wickets for 42 runs, L. Wybrow three for 27, and W. Heads two for 20.
