Recent enlistments in North Otago for the New Zealand Military Forces at the Oamaru recruiting office include. Edward C. Knight, John Hunter, David E. W* Gillies, Gilbert A. Rocknell. Hugh Maloney, William H. Reel. Clarence T. Furey, William James Samson. Gordon Barr* Gordon McGimpsey, Winston J. Gifiin. James W. Scott and William H. Muldrew. KINEMA ENTERTAINMENTS MAJESTIC THEATRE “ Jamaica Inn ” The coaches avoided “Jamaica Inn,” the story of which will be shown tonight and Tuesday. Its name was evil, and no man knew what its dark shutters hid; Yet it was to “Jamaica Inn” that Mary Yellan went to join her aunt and uncle. Only too soon was she to learn the full tale of its horror, though she stayed beneath its roof because of her aunt, so lovely once, so battered and haunted now. So she learned of the smugglers and murderers, and the riff-raff of the coast; of the wreckers whose profession it was to lure ships inland by false lights when tempests blew, and raid the defenceless crew and plunder the cargo Into Mary’s life came love, even in this out-of-the-way place, from a man who seemed to be one of the wreckers, but proved his love worthy of her. She, too, came to know Humphrey Pengallan, the squire who was the sinister brains behind the sinister doings of “ Jamaica Inn.” Charles Laughton plays the squire, and a newcomer Maureen O’Hara, is cast as Mary Yellan. Others in the cast are Leslie Banks, Emlyn Williams, Marie Ney, and Robert Newton. OPERA HOUSE “ My Bill ” Two features and a serial show tonight finally at the Opera House. Heralded as giving Kay Francis the most human appealing role in her career, the Warner Brothers’ picture, “ My Bill,” based on Tom Barry’s stage play “ Courage,” is showing with a cast that also includes Bonita Granville, Anita Louise. Bobby Jordan, John Liter, and Dickie Moore. The role clayed by the star marks a radical departure for her. since it is designed to enlist the audience’s sympathetic appreciation rather than-to impress with the glamour of personality. “ Racket Busters ” For many years rackets involving the importation and sale of produce in the sidewalk markets in New York City have flourished. The underworld has taken its toll from both the farmers who raise the vegetables and the commission men who sell them. The second chapter of “ The Lone Ranger Rides Again” is also shown with the programme.
