DROWNING FATALITY
HUTT RIVER TRAGEDY WOULD-BE RESCUER’S DEATH (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON. Feb. 18. Getting into difficulties when he went to his sister’s aid, James Gordon Holder, of 16 Kilminster avenue, Wellington, was drowned in the Hutt River at Maori Bank, yesterday.
Holder, his sister, Miss Miriam Holder, aged 17 years, and two other young people, went to Maori Bank in the morning to attend a picnic. Four of them went in to bathe. Miss Holder stepped into a deep hole, and her brother went to her assistance and immediately got into difficulties himself. One Of the other two managed to rescue the girl, but Holder, who was apparently a poor swimmer, was drowned. The body was recovered in the afternoon by Constable F. J. Williams, of Upper Hutt. Miss Holder suffered shock, but was able to return home after being attended by a doctor.
