AUSTRALIA'S HALF-CASTES
THIRD OF NATIVE POPULATION BIG INCREASE IN EIGHTEEN YEARS (From Our Own Correspondent) ‘ ' SYDNEY. Feb. 7. * Aboriginal half-castes have increases since 1921 from 17.7 to 33 per cent, of Australia’s native population. The total aboriginal population of Australia is now 77JJ59, including 25,712 halfcastes. , , , Western Australia contains nearly half of the total full-blood population, with 21,878, of whom 10,000 live outside white influence. There are 794 fullblood aborigines in New South Wales, 81 in Victoria. 12,030 in Queensland. 2684 in South Australia. 1 in Tasmania, and 14,089 in the Northern Territory. New South Wales has 10,069 of the 25.712 half-castes. On June 30 last, when the census was taken, 11,343 full-blood aborigines were in regular employment, 7205 were in supervised camps, and 20,155 were classed as nomadic. There were 21,075 full-blood children, half of whom were living in the bush with nomadic tribes. ’ : . - ;
In 1939. 6817 half-castes were regularly employed. 3313 were in supervised camos, and 1186 were nomadic. ■ Of 11.437 half-cast children. 047 were classed as nomadic, and 5710 were ia supervised camps.
