CLOSE FINISHES RECORDED OVERCAST WINS PAYTON CUP The Dunedin Whippet Racing Club held its monthly meeting at Tahuna Park on Saturday. The attendance was larger than usual, although the fields were on the small side. The racing, however, was of a high standard, some close finishes being recorded. Overcast. owned by W. Winchester, won the main event, the Payton Memorial Cup. just in front of his kennelmate. Buck’s Head. The following officials controlled the meeting;—Starter. Mr J. Glass; timekeener. Mr J. McMullan: colour steward. Mr E. Manly: judges Messrs R. E! Brown and G. Little; track stewards. Messrs T. Pledge and J. Manly: scale steward. Mr P. McKinlay. jun, Results: — Novice Handicap Of 175 yards. A. Keenan’s Ginger Jack (limit) .. 1 H. E. Mills’s Milton Lassie (limit) .. 5! P. McKinlay’s Mr Mac (limit) .. .. 3 The onlv starters. Mr Mack led out. but got caught up in the wires, leaving Ginger Jack to come on gnd .win by two lengths from Milton Lassie! who was having her first run in a race. Time. 10 4-ssec. Improvers’ Handicap, Of 175 yards. Mrs M. H. McKinlay’s Replica (scr) I W. Winchester's Shadeland (scr). .. 5! E. J. Reynolds’s Sailing Lady (scr) S The only starters. Replica led all the way to win by half a length from Shadeland. who was stopping at the finish. Sailing Ladv was third, a head away. .Time. 10 3-ssec. H. F. Payton Memorial Cup Of 175 yards. Winchester’s Buck’s Head (7yds) 2. Mrs F. T. Fraser’s Cock Robin (124yds) 3. Final Overcast .. ........ 1 , Buck’s Head .. . . . . 2 Phantom Gold .... .. 3 Also started: Cock Robin, Granvin,. and Hot Luck. Overcast quickly assumed the lead, and, stalling off a strong challenge from Buck’s Head, won by a head. Phantom Gold was another head away in third place. Time, 10 2-ssec. Second-class Handicap, Of 175 Yards C. N. Unwin’s Hot Chance (114yds) 1 G. Campbell’s Will Fyffe (124yds) .. 2 Mrs Unwin’s Gipsy Fair (12yds) .. 3 The only starters. Hot Chance won easily by one length and a-half. Gipsy Fair was a length further back in third place. Time, 10 2-ssec. Free-for-all Of 170 Yards ’ W. Winchester’s Buck’s Plead (scr) 1 C. N; Unwin’s Hot Chance (scr) .. 2 C. N. Unwin’s Hot Luck (scr) .. 3 Also started: Overcast (scr) and Cock Robin (scr). From a bad start, in which Cock Robin was disqualified, the winner led all the way, heads separating the placed dogs. Time, 10 2-ssec. ' Open Hurdles Handicap, Five flights. 175 yards. A. Heenan’s Ginger Jack (164yds) .. 1 G. Campbell’s White Gold (174yds) 2 Mrs C. Menhinnick’s King Midas (134yds) .. .. .. .. .. .. 3 The only starters. White Gold led over the first hurdle, but Ginger Jack quickly ran to the lead, and, jumping nicely, ran home an easy winner by six lengths. King Midas was two lengths further back third. Time, 12 4-ssec.
