THE ASHBURTON MEETING
NIGHTDRESS PRINCIPAL WINNER
STRIP DEFEATS GAY PARADE
HURDLES TO COLONEL FRENCH
(From Our Special Reporter) ASHBURTON. Sept. 16. The Ashburton Racing Club’s spring meeting was held In fine weather and attracted a fairly large attendance. Motor cars were not so numerous as usual. The track provided good going, but was a bit on the slow side. The Wrecker was made favourite for the Ashburton Handicap, but after making the pace with Sliver Slipper to the home turn they both stopped, and Nightdress, taking charge clown the running, kept Wine Card at bay at the business end of the race. Wine Card’s final effort came a bit too late. The John Grigg Stakes saw Gold Flight take charge after entering the straight and over the final stages drew away with Dorla, whom she beat without being ridden right out. The Spring Handicap resulted in a comfortable win for Strip, who had no great trouble in beating Gay. Parade, although the margin between them at the finish was small The favourite. Winning Rival, was slow away at the st att and thu... settled whatever chance she had. During the day £11.942 MOs went through the totallsatpr, as against 10s last year, . NOTES ON THE RUNNING THE CARDINAL’S IMPRESSIVE WIN (Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, Sept. 16, The three-year-old Foxmond was solidly supported for the Henderson Handicap, and she duly won. Foxmond was forced to cover a good deal of ground when she ran up on the outside of the leaders. Bronze Moth, Paxeno and Sebrof, who were abreast at the turn, but she ran on strongly to hold off a very determined challenge from Royal TraY- , who . nicely placed behind the leading bunch In the running. Foxmond looks like being a good filly,, and Royal Tray should also win races. Greek Queen, after drawing the outside, finished fast for third, and it was a very encouraging effort Sebrof, who drew No.; 16, displayed speed in the middle stages, but weakened into fourth after joining the leaders at the turn, Milanlon and Wyndora ran fair races; and Bronze Moth, after being up in front, was sixth. Bronze Moth may improve with the run, having his first start in open company. The Cardinal registered a fine performance to win the Avondale Cup from the little-fancied Airam. who paid double figures for a place. The Cardinal and Airam were a long • way back near the rear of the field commencing the last seven furlongs, and they did not become prominent Until reaching the straight Airam was the first to reach the leaders, but The Cardinal was In hot pursuit, and he just outstayed her at the end. There was a great race for third, King Rey just heading Tldewalter, Philcourt and Black Musk, who were practically In line Ned Cuttle tired In the straight after being third most of the way, and Jayola, the early leader, also retired In the rurf home. Jayola pulled up lame after going through the barrier. Lovaals Jumped out very cleanly to win the Avondale Stakes from the favourites, Kentucky and Beau Leon. ‘Lovaals .was clear at the distance, but she was weakening at the end, and had only a head to spare from Kentucky, who made a very courageous effort. Beau Leon, who drew No, 15. was not prominent early, but came home brilliantly on the outside to be a very close third. Beau Leon, In spite of the fact that he had had a race previously, may be the likeliest improver of the trio. Queen City ran a creditable fourth, and the closest of the others were Kindergarten and Merrymeer, who showed early pace. Lovaals is a .full sister to the useful performer Valmlnt. The Champion Hack Plate provided another close finish, Our Jean doing well in the last 50 yards to win, from Orello and Hagen. Orello reached the front after going about two furlongs and looked a winner after passing the distance, /only to weaken and go under by a neck from Our Jean, who was always well placed and registered a solid performance The race should improve- Orello, who was probably In need of the run. Hagen came heme solidly from a good way back for third, and Veritable was a creditable fourth Val Lu was up In front with Oroiio at the distance, but weakened Into fifth. Clipper and Brazen Bold both ran respectable races carrying 4Jlb overweight. THE FIELDS FOR TO-DAY (Special to Daily Times) AUCKLAND, Sept. 17. Well ridden by Tattersal, Quadroon got through on the rails in the straight to beat Old Surrey in the final strides of the Carnarvon Cup. Quadroon was one of the first to begin, but soon dropped in behind Lucullus Lad and The Bigot, with Dungarvan, Centrepoise, and Old Surrey most prominent of the others. There was not much change in the order down the back except that Centrepoise drifted several places, while Dungarvan and Old Surrey became more prominent. The Bigot dropped out of it at the half-mile, leaving Lucullus Lad In charge, with Dungarvan and Old Surrey going up on the outside of Quadroon. This was the order into the straight, where Old Surrey grudally drew ahead, but finally Quadroon put in a dab on the fence and got
up to win by a head. Centrepoise finished very last for third money, nearly a length away, with Might fourth, then Lucullus Lad, Llane, and Flying Acre. The favourite, Centrepoise, looked unlucky. He was finishing over everything, and but for losing his place down the back he must have won. Might’s fourth was a good effort as he lost a lot of ground at the start. The Bigot was unable to show any dash at all in the soft going. Screen Star made amends for his Wanganui failure by an all the way win in the Robinson Handicap. Ecstatic joined him early, and they led to the straight from The Crooner and Disdain, who were followed by Solaria. Once in line. Screen Star drew ahead, and his nearest attendants weakened, Solaria running on for second, with The Crooner third, then Gay Chou, Ecstatic Disdain, Smoke Screen, and Slegmund. Smoke Screen was the favourite, but he was never dangerous, and did not pull up too well, nor did The Crooner. Disdain looked big, but showed brilliance for half a mile. October 21 23 —Gore R.C The Geraldine Meeting Acceptances are due to-day for the Geraldine meeting. Dunedin Spring Meeting Nominations are due to-morrow for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting Passaform Passaform appeared to move a bit short when going down to the post for the Spring Handicap. Second Innings Second Innings was a bit on his toes at Ashburton, and broke away twice when lining up for the Spring Handicap. Benevolent Support came for Benevolent in the Penscroft Handicap. He was slow away and failed to make up his lost ground. Sovereign Lady Sovereign Lady looked big and healthy at Ashburton, but on the big side in condition. She should bear an improved appearance in a few weeks. Likely to Improve Both Parquet and Gay Rebel looked a bit backward in racing shape when raced at Ashburton, and will be improved by the race. Dictate Dictate drew an outside position at the barrier in the Spring Handicap, and after being one of the last to get going, failed to make up his lost ground. Dinah Dhu Dinah Dhu again showed pace when produced at Ashburton, and had to make up ground to keep Blue Coat busy to beat her. Easy Money Protests have been lodged by clubs against the loss of the rebate, but there is an opinion abroad that the tax on revenue of racing will not end there. Kilrobc Kllrobe wore winkers when racing at Ashburton, and when doing a preliminary, shaped as if they were a source of annoyance. She dwelt at the start. Scold The Myosotis—Berate filly Scold was slow away in her race at Ashburton. She made up a lot of ground and may be worthy of note. Lord Midas Lord Midas began fairly well in the Novice Stakes, but appeared to be in trouble after they entered the straight. He, however, came on. and finished third. King’s Toast The Hunting-Song—Smoke Concert three-year-old gelding King’s Toast, showed pace at Ashburton. He ran out wide at the turn and lost a lot of ground. Metal Bird The Weathervanc gelding Metal Bird pulled up after the County Hurdles as if it would be a fruitless task to attempt to train him for another race. Settled the Favourite Silver Slipper used her pace in the Ashburton Handicap, and going with The Wrecker to keep him. busy, probably contributed to his defeat. They both went too fast to last. Winning Rival Winning Rival looked in good shape when produced at Ashburton, but she wap one of the last to leave in the Spring Handicap and had her chance settled at the rise of the barrier. Not Keen Some of the northern trainers who were at Ashburton were not keen to bring horses on a four-day journey to Wingatul for one day’s racing. They may, however, change their minds before nominations close to-morrow. St. Cloud The Robespierre—Charmilla filly St. Cloud has been In the boom, but so far has failed to make good. She is a lightframed sort that might do better when produced in more robust shape. Boloyna Boloyna outclassed the lot he met in the first division of the Novice Stakes and won very comfortably in Imln 15 2-ssec, or faster than Blue Coat, who had to be ridden right out to win. An Easy Win Colonel French is only a young four-year-old, but he proved seasoned enough to score an easy win in the County Hurdles. He ran down the last hurdle, but had far too much pace for Jewish Lad in the run home. Comus Comus ran up to the leaders in the County Hurdles as if he was going to take a hand in the finish. He appeared to get blocked when going into the hurdle at the seven furlong post, and jumped from a stand. This put him out of court A Probable Cause Apprentices were much in evidence at Ashburton, where quite a number of horses had them on top. The fact that many of the novice riders were In the saddle may have been partly responsible for the quick spread of the fields at the rise of the barrier. Great Swoop Great Swoop was rated at 121 b better in the Penscroft Handicap than one of his own age in Prudent Prince, whose burden became further reduced by a 51b allowance. Great Swoop went well for part of the journey, but faded out. Wardress Wardress looked bright and well, and was fancied for the Penscroft Hack Handicap, but 9.9 proved beyond her, and the best she could do was a fair fourth. She was giving Prudent Prince 291 b, Shanghai Lily 321 b. and Knight Commander 281 b, so that the top-weight put up a good performance to get near them. The Novice Field Some of the fields at Ashburton became verv ragged in the first couple of strides after the rise of the barrier. This wad particularly the case in the Novice Stakes, in which both divisions soon spread over about 100 yards. Green horses and novice riders contributed to the fact that in the first couple of strides each race had only two or three with an apparent chance. Valueless Nightdress became eligible for a rehandicap after winning the Ashburton Handicap but Wine Card, whom he just beat, can meet Studley Royal. Gay R'ebel Mount Val The Wrecker, and Silvei Slipper on nracticallv the same terms, and so far as they are concerned at Geraldine the rehandicap becomes valueless. The same thing applies to the Squatters Handicap, as Gay Parade, with 61b over-weight, beat Paper Note, Lady Leigh, and Kilrobe at Ashburton, and can meet them on better terms at Geraldine. F’ortunately, there is a lot of fresh material engaged at Ashburton, but sufficient has been said to show that a premature publication of handicaps cannot be balanced by rehandicapplng only one horse —the winner. The John Grlgg Stakes A field of nine paraded for the John Grlgg Stakes, but when in the birdcage some of the youngsters did not look ready for the task, and Shikari went out of favour owing to a report about contracting a slight cold. He looks a good deal on the big side, and his somewhat cramped action behind displayed by lifting his hocks when walking did not suggest that he would jump away and gather speed from a flat-foot start. Doria Is a shapely filly and well forward in condition, and Gold Flight is rather smaller in stature. The Ringmaster colt Whiphand had evidently done well and presented a nippy appearance, but made no show in the race His stablemate Don’t Forget, a likelylooking colt by Mysotis, came along at the finish to get third, and may improve. Noko lacks size, and after showing early speed dropped out. Wild Fox ran a fair race, and Tatting and Sunny Queen require more time. They jumped awav
from a good line, with Whiphand and Noko smartest away. Doria was ridden to join the leaders, but Gold Flight, more patiently handled, waited, and the fact contributed to her success. She ran to the front after entering the. straight, and finally won with something in hand from Doria, who should soon win a race. Don’t Forget may improve more than any of the defeated lot. , . Latest Edition Tire Grattan Loyal—Daphne de Oro three-year-old Latest Edition will have to Improve on his Ashburton showing If he Is to foot it well with others of his age this season. A Bracket Imperial Jade, the sister to Indianapolis, and the Peter Volo gelding Mackscot appeared to form a strong bracket for the Selma Trot, but after being handy up to about a mile or more, finished outside the money. Siege Gun The Maxegin—Dark Stream gelding Siege Gun lost a bit of ground at the start of the Rakala Trot, but had the race well won at the home turn. Great Blaze Great Blaze did not finish too generously in the Rakaia Trot, and after catching Axspear and Gienhoime, appeared to bore in when under pressure. He, however, did not cause any interference. Accountant The Jack Potts—Auditress gelding Accountant was made favourite for the Rakaia Trot, but he failed to get dangerous when the field settled down to work.
