PRACTICAL PSYCHOLOGY CLUB

Last Thursday evening the Dunedin Practical Psychology Club held its weekly meeting, the subject under discussion being “ Treatment for Insomnia.” It was stated that the causes for insomnia were mainly mental discomfort or physical discomfort. A really effective cure could be brought about only by finding out and facing the cause of the physical or mental unrest; but treatment could relieve sleeplessness. which was mostly a habit. Once formed it was very difficult to break it. If the mind was relaxed and the thoughts pleasant, sleeplessness was not really harmful; but usually thoughts of fear and worry were entertained and the effect was detrimental to the individual’s health. Several members gave helpful suggestions and practical advice regarding treatment for insomnia. Mental unrest and worry were the dominating causes of broken sleep, so if one could retire with a perfectly relaxed body and a peaceful mind, sleeplessness would gradually disappear.
