RUGBY FOOTBALL

OTAGO v. WELLINGTON The Ranfurly Shield match between Otago and Wellington is being looked forward to with greater interest than has been shown in any other match this season. UNIVERSITY FOOTBALLERS CONGRATULATIONS FROM COUNCIL Moving a resolution at the meeting of the University Council yesterday expressing the congratulations of the council to Messrs Gillies and:Watt on their inclusion in an All Black team, Dr Fitzgerald said that he had had no intention of speaking of these two players particularly. His idea was to speak of the University Club as a whole. He did: not. think it was beneath the dignity of the council' to take cognisance . of the fact that two'members of the club had been chosen to' represent New Zealand against Australia, and another of the-club's representatives had been chosen as an emergency In a' recent report the principal of Edinburgh University had made reference to the value of athletics and physical education generally. He had recently noticed in the cablegrams that the professor at" the head of the Health Department in Edinburgh had stated that if he had charge of the physical care of the nation and its diet he would make it an Al nation in two years. Dr Stanley Batchelor: Two generations, not two years.—(Laughter.)

Mr James Wallace seconded the motion. The chancellor (Mr' W; J. Morrell) said it was safe to say that every member of the council felt pleasure at the part that their University Club was taking in All Black football, and he referred : to past players in Gilray, Adams, Cabot, M'Clymont, Fea and Perry. Dr ■ Fitzgerald said that he was not sure that these players had represented New Zealand against Australia, though they might have played against New South Wales or a New South Wales University team.
