A PUZZLE COMPETITION

10 L'HE EDITOR

Sir, —Presuming that "Z. Z." has read the promoters' reply to his most unreasonable letter I daresay he is regretting his hasty rush into print. I wish to point out that the puzzle called for words from Chambers's or Oxford dictionaries, and not for words found in any paper, periodical, etc. The word " ee " appears in its logical alphabetical order in Chambers's Dictionary, and is clearly defined there, leaving no doubt as to its being a word complete in itself. When "Z. Z." says it is as logical to take the "x.c" out of "excluding" and class these letters as a word, he achieves a masterpiece of absurdity, for which, unfortunately, no prize is offered. With regards to "Q. Q." and "this very doubtful solution," I would say the solution is clear and correct, and I can assure him that I have no knowledge as to the identity of the promoters or «tf the other prize-winner. As a prize-winner whose name was published with the result, I wish to congratulate the promoters on their very interesting puzzle, which was of a type to be commended instead of being most unfairly abused and criticised. I suggest that "Z. Z." and "Q. Q." should admit the unfairness of their accusations.—l am, etc., E. E.
