SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO
The Lord Ashley has brought us very important news from the North, the substance of which we are only able briefly to indicate, in consequence of the pressure of local matter, v Accounts from Hawked Bay are to the 7th inst. They state that on the morning of the previous, day Captain Redd had arrived at Napier from Poverty Bay, haying come down expressly to seek protection for the settlers there. ‘ The European's and friendly natives were threatened by large bodies of Hau-1 haus, and both were urgent in their request for assistance in men and arms. The St. Hilda steamer had arrived at Napier, coming into port “ covered with Hau-hau flags,” taken at Tokomaru and Hick’s Bay, at both of which places the friendly natives had defeated the fanatics. The Brisk was lying at anchor at Hick’s Bay on the 2nd inst., with Major Von Tempsky on board, waiting for the ships of the Opotiki expedition. The papers contain various accounts of fighting—thq Hau-haus getting the worst ,of iti They appear,' however, to have a stronger force in the field than the loyal natives, and a stronghold at Pukemairiro ;is said to be “ being garrisoned from all parts,’’ and to be “ impregnable without “ artillery.” “ 1 ,’ h ; A Proclamation has been published in the “ General Government “ Gazette,” ' under the hand of His Excellency the Governor, “announcing to the natives of “New Zealand that the war which “commenced at Oakura is at art “ end.” It proceeds to state that the Governor took up arms to protect the European settlers from destruction, and to punish those who refused to submit to a peaceful adjustment of disputes ; that sufficient punishment has been inflicted on the tribes that resorted to violence; but that the peace of the Colony must no longer be disturbed. The Governor, believing that the natives will now see the hopelessness of any further resistance, proclaims therefore a general amnesty, excepting those concerned in the perpetration of certaip “barbarous “and treacherous” murders, which are specified. The proclamation concludes with an announcement of His Excellency’s intenti6n to call a meeting of all the Great Chiefs, to consult with the Government as to the best- means of enabling /the Maoris to assist in making the laws they are called on to obey. In order to enlarge the powers of Major Brassey,'' commanding the expeditionary. force against the fanatics' at Opotiki and Whakatane, martial law • has been nroclaimed throughout those districts. . . .
Mr James Smith ably addressed the jury yesterday, in .defence of Jatvey; and His Honor, Mr Justice Richmond, was- engaged. in . summing up from three o’clock until a quarter to seven. At this stage, of .the proceedings the .prisoner" fainted, .and . had to He removed; and the VJwdgS; after'Consultation With- V)t Hardy, who attended‘to the prisoner, adjourned the Court until ten o’clock- this forenoon. A special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce is called for this afternoon at three o’clock. The business as advertised is to consider the advisability of encouraging the introduction of Chinese into the Province, and also the provisions of the existing Bankrupting Acts as affecting the currency. A very important prospectus appears in our advertising columns. It announces the formation of a Southern Steam Navigation Compare on the limited liability principle, to afford increased facility of communication between Dunedin and the ports north and south of it. The capital proposed is L 15.000, to be raised in 300 shares of LSO each.
