TRAIN STOPPED ON BRIDGE
MAN CREEPING BETWEEN RAILS ENGINE DRIVER ACTS PROMPTLY (Per United Press Association) PALMERSTON N., Sept. 14. Brought to a sudden stop on the Longburn bridge, the northbound Main Trunk express narrowly missed running over a man who was crawling on his hands and knees between the rails. The man was an inmate of the Old People's Home at Awapuni who was suffering from loss of memory and had wandered from the institution. When the engine entered on the bridge the driver saw the man between the rails. The brakes were applied promptly and the train was brought to a stop a short distance from the man, who was lifted into the engine until the bridge had been crossed and was then placed in the guard’s van and brought to Palmerston North. He has been restored to the home.
