MOSGIEL SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the Mosgiel District High School Committee was presided over by the Rev. Hugh Graham (chairman). The Education Board wrote in reference to the repairing of asphalt. This was a subsidy matter, towards which the board would meet half the cost. If the committee was willing to assist, the work could be proceeded with. —Received, the matter to receive attention when funds were available.

A number of letters covering matters of a routine nature were received from the Education Board and dealt with. These covered Bible teaching and opening devotional exercises, the replacement of worn-out Ensigns, the supply of coloured chalk for school use, and the radio installation in schools.— It was resolved to apply for the subsidy promised towards the installation of a school radio. The rector reported on the staff changes for the month. Mr Andrews had commenced his duties, Miss Allan had received a permanent appointment at Riverton, and Mr Williamson was an additional assistant. Two acknowledgments had been received of trees supplied from the school gardens, and a letter from the Borough Council thanking the rector, staff, and children for assistance on Arbor Day.— Received.

The inspector’s report on the recent visit was read. Amongst other items mention was made that the headmaster had organised the teaching duties so that comprehensive modern courses of instruction were provided. The teachers were employing approved methods of instruction with commendable earnestness. The order, discipline and tone were good. The gardens continued to be an excellent feature of the school. The inspectors were well pleased with the orderly assembly, the new radio equipment being used to advantage. The secondary department was a valuable asset.—The report was received.

The Visiting Committee reported on the visit to the school. A number of small requirements were detailed, including some malting for the infant school.—lt was decided

to pass the annual grant of '£l to the woodwork department. After a lengthy discussion on the methods to adopt to raise money for school purposes, it was decided to hold a community sing at an early date, and a garden party later in the year. Messrs Hendry and Nichol were appointed a visiting committee for September. A number of very necessary works and equipment were mentioned, but the shortage of funds prevented these being undertaken at present.
