ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
FAST AND EVEN GAME OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND DRAW (Per United Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Sept. 13. In a fast and even game that the heavy rain and strong winds could not rob of interest Southland and Otago drew, 4 goals all, in the representative Association football match yesterday afternoon. The visitors had an' early lead, and kept it almost throughout, Southland managing to equalise the scores only in the last two minutes. R. M‘Lean scored four goals for Otago, and M‘Cormack (2), Morrison, and Reddington scored for the home side. The Southland forwards lacked the combination oi the visiting side, but improved in the second spell. Both sets of backs played fine defensive football, and the two goal-keepers—Race (Otago) and Pay (Southland)—were very good. Barclay and Binnie, Otago’s full-backs, played consistently well and with excellent judgment. . The Otago juniors beat Southland juniors by 4 goals to 2. AUCKLAND BEATS WELLINGTON SIX GOALS TO FOUR (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 13. With both teams playing bright, open football, despite the tearing northerly, the Auckland Association football representatives were successful against Wellington at the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon in the match for the Frank Campbell Rose Bowl. Wellington, the holders, put up a good fight, and only in the latter stages of the second half did they go under to n team which proved a shade superior in team work and positional play. Early in the second spell, when the score was 4—4, it looked as though Wellington, with the advantage of the wind, would finish a goal or two to the good, but Auckland launched a sustained attack which gave them a 6 —4 victory. Wellington’s luck was out, two of the Auckland goals being scored off defending players, but unquestionably the better team won. The scorers for Auckland were Jepson (2), Stevenson (2), Needham, and Chapman, and for Wellington M'Kenzie (2), Hatchard, and Leslie. The match between Poverty Bay and a second Wellington team resulted in an easy win for Wellington by 5 goals to 1. IN OTHER CENTRES (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 13.
