WOMEN’S CRICKET
OTAGO ASSOCIATION The fourth annual report of the Otago Women’s Cricket Association states, inter alia: — A definite improvement in the standard of play was shown by the representative team, which succeeded in winning the Mary Machin Shield for the first time. At a meeting of representatives from the various secondary schools held at the beginning of the season it was decided that the schools should commence practice, and as soon as the girls had received sufficient instruction, inter-school matches could be played. An appeal to the Otago Cricket Association for coaches for the schools found a ready response, and the interest and assistance of the association were appreciated. The financial position of the association, while not as good as last season, is satisfactory, the balance sheet showing a credit balance of £sl 6s, as compared with £64 5s at the' conclusion of the previous year. Fourteen clubs were affiliated to the association during the past season, six A Grade, eight B Grade, and five C Grade teams being entered. Two new clubs affiliated, Mornington and Koputai, while H. 8., Mooney’s, Woolworths, and Mayfair withdrew from the competitions. The Wool worth Shield for A Grade competition was won by Planet with 24 points, the runners-up being St. Kilda and Grange, level, with 17 points. The Walter Strang Cup for B Grade competition was won by Roslyn Mills with 31 points, Y.W.C.A. being runners-up with 21 points. The Norah Ross Cup for C Grade competition was won by Koputai with 21 points, the runners-up being Green Island with 16 points. The Hudson Trophy for the highest aggregate runs was again won by M. Bishop, of Grange, with 378 runs to her credit, G. Rouxelle, of St. Kilda, being runner-up with 345 runs The special bowling prize presented by Mrs W. A. Ross for the highest aggregate wickets taken was won by J. Little, of Planet, with 68 wickets, B. Campbell, of Mornington, being runner-up with 61 wickets. The Otago team played Canterbury for the Mary Machin Shield at Logan Park on Friday and Saturday, December 27 and 28. Canterbury in the first innings compiled 127 runs, and in the second innings 65 runs. Otago in the first innings compiled 75 runs, and in the second innings were six wickets for 121 runs, Otago won by four wickets. A team selected from the B Grade played a match against Southland on the Oval on March 23. Southland, batting first, compiled 85 runs, and Otago replied with 41 runs. Southland won on the first innings. Mrs W. A. Ross entertained the Canterbury and Otago teams at her residence on Sunday, December 29. a very pleasant evening being enjoyed by all. The association’s annual dance was held at the Early Settlers’ Hall on May 13, and was thoroughly enjoyed by the large crowd who attended. During the evening the association’s trophies were presented to their winnprs bv Mrs H. R. Daniolc.
