PROSPECTS OF TAVUA Dr Loftus Hills, in a report on the property of Tavua Gold Developments, Ltd., of Tavua, Fiji, states that the work on Morton’s area 209 has been disappointing, and no further expenditure on this area is warranted at present. The results at Wai Kata Kata, although showing values of 4.sdwt in places, indicate a lack of longitudinal and depth continuity. These areas must be now classed as unattractive. The results of the work during the past six months on the Homeward Bound area, he states, are encouraging. Dia-mond-drilling and shaft-sinking have exposed a lode system carrying gold values averaging lOdwt a ton. The phase of work now reached is the systematic opening up of the lode system of shafts, drives and crosscuts at the 100-foot level. The policy, the report continues, should be to concentrate on the Homeward Bound. Accordingly the working programme for the next few months will combine ore development with exposure of lode structures for study preparatory to testing at greater depth.

MINING NEWS GILLESPIE’S BEACH RETURN The secretaries of Gillespie's Beach Gold Dredging Company, Ltd. (Messrs T. H. Thompson and Sons) advise that the return for the week ended September 10 amounted to lOloz 12dwt for 130 hours’ dredging. The dredge is working on the beach end of the cut. QUARTZ MOUNTAIN (PAPUA), LIMITED. The latest report on the activities at Quartz Mountain (Papua), Ltd., states: — After a trial run with the altered plant, further adjustments and additions were found necessary. Opportunity was then taken completely to overhaul the large Diesel engine preparatory to continuous crushing, which was again commenced on July 31. In a report dated August 20 the manager stated that the mill had then run intermittently, putting through 160 tons of ore. , The elevator constructed to lift the product from the rolls’to the tube mill had been completed. Another elevator was also required to lift the product from the tube mill so as to enable the launders to be raised to give sufficient fall into the cyanide tanks. The construction at the plant of the second elevator was nearing completion, and the manager considered that this would enable two shifts to be worked, and also give increased tonnage per hour. Two zinc boxes were installed, each having eight compartments, and making good recoveries, only traces of gold being found in the barren solution. The recoveries then were I.6dwt by blankets and 2.75dwt by cyanide extraction, making a total recovery of an assay value of 4.35dwt per ton. There has been a severe epidemic of influenza on the island, and at the time of writing a number of natives was affected. There had been a good run of the plant for the last week covered by the report, and the manager expected that when the second elevator was installed to give the greater fall to the tanks for the sands 50 tons per day should be reached. WEST COAST DREDGES (Per United Press Association) GREYMOUTH, Sept. 12, The Argo dredge return was 98oz for 130 hours over 13,500 yards. The Maori Gully i-eturn was 220 z 9dwt for 197 hours. The Mossy Creek dredge return was 520 z 12dwt for 9855 yards and 136 hours’ work. The Nemona dredge return was 38oz 16dwt for 14,900 yards and 122 hours’ work. LONDON PRODUCE MARKET The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office under date September 11: Frozen Meat.—There is a steady trade in wethers at rather better values. Smaller supplies of ewes have caused prices to harden. The market has improved for first quality lambs, while seconds remain steady. Wethers, light, 4jd to s]d per lb; wethers, heavy, 4d to 4;}d per lb; ewes. 3Jd to 4,jd per lb; lambs, twos. 7d to 7Ad per lb; lambs, eights, 7d to 7id per lb; lambs, fours. 6jd to 6§d per lb; lambs, seconds, 6ild to 7d per lb. HOWARD, SMITH, LTD. INTERIM DIVIDEND PAYABLE The announcement of an interim ordinary dividend at the unchanged rale of 2£ per cent, is an important event for Howard Smith, Ltd. (says the Melbourne Argus). In 1927 10 per cent, was paid, but distributions dwindled, and ordinary dividends were passed in three years, 1930-32. In 1933 14 per cent, was distributed and the rate rose to 2J per cent, for both 1934 and 1935, payment being made after the close of accounts. In the last year the outlook has brightened. Instead of an unremunerative holding in Australian Iron and Steel, Ltd., the company now owns 210,844 shares in Broken Hill Proprietary, upon which £26,360 (1.3 per cent, on Howard Smith ordinary capital) is being received annually. Another shareholding, 139,299 preference shares in Southern Portland Cement, also gave a small return this vcar, after a long period. The payment of this ordinary dividend by Howard Smith, Ltd., is an indication that Australian Steamships Pty., Ltd., a subsidiary, has recovered from the effect of the seamen’s strikes in August and December. The 1935 profit of Howard Smith equalled 3 1-3 per cent, on ordinary capital, after allowing for preference dividend requirements. SHORTAGE OF SHERRY It is now becoming clear that this year’s vintage of Spanish wines will suffer, apart from the destruction of vines, through the shortage of labour (state London wine trade advices). Shipments of existing vintages have almost ceased. A serious shortage of sherry and <ei the increasingly popular Spanish white wines is expected if the war continues. WERE’S TRUST RESULTS NEW ISSUE OF SHARES Were’s Investment Trust. Limited, Melbourne, earned a net profit of £22,654 for the year ended June 30, compared with £17,660 in the previous year. There is available £24,357, from which £7OB has been appropriated to extinguish the debit on exchange fluctuation account. The directors propose to pay a dividend of 3;, per cent, from income earned in Australia, first out of profits subject to Federal special property tax, and the remainder, if any, out of the profits not subject to this tax. In addition, it is proposed to pay a dividend of Ij per cent, wholly from income earned outside Australia, and not subject to tax in Australia. Last year a dividend of 4 per cent, was paid. A sum of £3OOO is transferred to general reserve, leaving £IB9B to be carried forward. The net profit does not include capital surplus resulting from changes in investments. This surplus, amounting to £5119, nas been transferred to investments fluctuations reserve. The market value of the company’s investments is stated to be £16,429 in excess of cost. . , ~ . The directors state that they believe that further capital could be used profitably and they propose to issue 300,000 shares of 5s each at par. These will be offered to shareholders in the proportion of one new share for every five shares held. TOOTAL BROADHURST COMPANY LARGE INCREASE OF PROFIT A net profit of £194,891 for the year ended June 30 was earned by Tootal, Broadhurst, Lee Company, Limited, England. This is an increase over last year of £50,709. or over 35 per cent., but following the conservative policy the directors make no change in the ordinary dividend, which for the fourth year is 10 per cent. The additional profits are largely used to strengthen the position, for after a lapse of six vears reserve allocations are resumed with a transfer of £25,000, while after setting aside £60,000, against £44,000, to income tax reserve, the balance carried forward is increased from £37.611 to £67.085. The company’s employees again receive £20.000 under the bonus scheme, and after allowing for this payment the profits are equal to nearly 22 per cent, on the ordinary capital.
