Aiwai was favourite for the Debutante Stakes, but she drew No. 9, and although she showed early pace the effort to get up to the leaders saw her fail to run on. There was no outstanding runner, but Icing put up a good performance and finished very resolutely. She is a half-sister to Aspian. Lucidus made a one-horse race of the Hurdles. He went to the front early and stayed there. He had a big break with the race half over, but was held hard and had sufficient reserve in the finish 1o win very comfortably from Brigadore. who stayed on better than Midacre. Valpai was next. Valpai was the favourite, but he jumped ba May Song and Sea Wrack were the choice’ of backers in the Trial after several of the form horses had been scratched. They both ran well but at the finish were decisively beaten by Mandamus. Mandamus finished like a very resolute stayer. Deficit’s win in the Guineas was a mild surprise,-but he won well on the day, staying the journey much better than more fancied opponents. .Deficit was always well placed in behind the pacemakers, Laughing Lass and Kan, with Gallic handy on the outer of Deficit. The others were strung out behind. There was no change in the order all the way, but on the turn Brazen King, who had been well back in second last place, began to move up. Laughing Lass and Karl led Deficit into the straight, with Deficit going exceptionally well. It was obvious he would win if he could get a clear run, and as soon as they straightened up he ran to the front and won comfortably from Laughing Lass, who kept her head in front of Karl. Brazen King was only another head away, and Dawning Light and Gallio were next. Deficit could not win the hack race on Thursday, yet he beat both Karl and Laughing Lass handsomely. Similarly, Brazen King improved, and there is no doubt he should have won. He made up a tremendous lot of ground in a fast run race. Gallio improved, but was well beaten at the finish. The Higgle Handicap was marred by the fall of Spiral on the turn as he was challenging the leaders, Full Throttle and Delrain, while West Tor fell over him just as he was beginning to move up from the rear. Boomerang and Gasman were also badly interfered with. This left Delrain and Full Throttle to fight out the finish, the former winning narrowly and at double figures. Boomerang was third, but he had lost too much ground at the time of the accident to do any better Wotan held on well at the finish of the Moutoa Hack to wear down Orac, who again attempted to win all the way. Hunting Maid, who was favourite, with L. J. Ellis up, got a poor passage and was an unlucky fourth. Recollection ran a creditable race for six or seven furlongs, but was not suited by the track. The favourite, Notium, could finish only third in the Owen Handicap, which Royal Secret won from end to end. Dungarvan made a determined effort to reach Royal Secret in the straight, but the winner won well, thus gaining her second success at the meeting Notium was always well placed, but could make no impression in tbe run home. Jonathan looked likely when he poked up on the rails just after entering the straight, but his condition would not permit him to go on, and he weakened into fourth place. Red Manfred was a close fifth. Jonathan and Red Manfred should be improved with their racing. Farmer was prominent to the turn, and then faded. The Aucklanders Surella and Philemup were favourites for the Spring Hack Handicap, and they finished urst and second. They were always in front, and Surella was always going well to win very decisively. Hatuma, one of the first to begin, was third, and Free Gold was fourth ahead, of Impersonator and Moquette Surelk is very speedy, and is a good-looking colt who should make a smart sprinter. Impersonator was never dangerous.
