TROTTING NOTES
By Sentinel Retiring It is reported that Mr T. Fox, one of the best known owners and breeders of light harness stock in Canterbury, is retiring from the game. Trotting Driver Suspended When the field for the first division of the Approved Handicap at a recent meeting at Harold Park (Sydney) was leaving the straight for the first time, Invicta fell, causing the driver of The Wobbler (A. E. Birch) to be unseated, and causing interference to Lord Mjnton. The stewards held an inquiry into- the occurrence. They reported that the mishap was caused by the careless driving of J. W. Andrews (Invicta), and suspended him from driving in races for two months. Auckland Affairs The Programme Committee of the Auckland Trotting Club has decided to hold S race for two-year-olds at the February meeting. A stake of £2OO will be allotted, and, in addition, a cup valued at 20 guineas has been given by Messrs Bridgens and Co., Ltd. Mr C. Cowan will present a gold-mounted whip to the driver of the winner. The distance will be one mile, and, subject to the approval of the Trotting Association, the race will be called the North Island Challenge Cup. The club has decided to hold a special meeting in the summer of 1940, when the principal race will be the Centenary Gold Trotting Cup. It is intended to give a substantial stake and make the class such as will attract the best horses in New Zealand and Australia. At Auckland The Auckland Trotting Club has decided to increase the stakes for its October meeting to £2850. This is £570 more than was distributed for the same meeting last year. The chief two-mile races will be for horses that can do 4min 39sec, and the fastest class for a mile and a-quarter contest is 2min 48sec. Few But Good Nervie Mauritius, dam of the Aus-tralian-bred free-legged pacer, Nervie’s Last, who has x-ecorded two firsts and four places in his six starts in New Zealand, produced only two foals (says an Auckland newspaper) Her first, May Mauritius, by Globe Derby, was a good winner in Australia, where she had a record of 2min 15sec. Nervie's Last, who had done very little racing in the Commonwealth, has a record at Epsom of 3min 18sec for a mile and a-half. Nervie Mauritius, who died after winning a race in 1930, two years after producing Nervie’s Last, was owned by Mrs A, Pitman, who bred May Mauritius and her halfbrother by Pedro Pronto. Mauritius, the head of the family, was an American-bred horse, by Bingen from Roxana, by King Wilkes, son of George Wilkes. He was imported to New Zealand in 1905, but was later sold to an Australian breeder. Pedro Pronto, sire of Nervie’s Last, was also at one time in New Zealand, where he won high-class races and sired good winners in Impromptu and Prince Pedro.
