OAMARU FIRE BOARD MR S. B. MACDONALD HONOURED Mr S. B. Macdonald (Dunedin), wjio has been transferred to Auckland, and , is a member of the Oamaru.Fire Board, I was the guest of the board at a valedictory dinner at the Queens Hotel. Those present were the, Mayor (Mr M. F. E. Cooney), Mr J. M. Forrester (chairman of the board), Messrs J. K Callender, J. A. Macpherson. F. Crawshaw, A. C. Piper (secretary), and Superintendent Herron. Mr Forrester congratulated Mr Ma,donald on his well-merited promotion, and expressed the re S re t°f the members at his departure. Mr Macdonald had not only worked hard as an insurance man, said Mr Forrester, but had set a fine example by his interest in various public matters, among others being Mayor of St. Kilda and for Very many years the propelling force in the Otago Expansion League. said how fortunate the board had oeen since its inception in having the type of: men that the Otago, Fire Underwriters’ Association had nominated and stated that Mr Macdonald was true to the type. He had not only had the interests of the insurance companies and of the board at heart, but had always been keenly interested in the welfare and comfort of the firemen. Particular reference was made by all the members of Mr Macdonald s thorough knowledge of all matters connected with the board and brigade work. The Mayor (Mr Cooney) congratulated the guest on his promotion and thanked him for his services to the community as a whole. He stated that the numerous valedictory functions in Dunedin were proof of the high esteem in which Mr Macdonald was held. Superintendent Herron spoke of Mr Macdonald’s keen interest in the work of the local brigade, his knowledge of equipment and the men’s requirements. His work was not only appreciated by the citizens of Oamaru, but also" by the firemen. Replying, Mr Macdonald thanked the Mayor and members for their kind wishes. The meetings of the Oamaru Fire Board had always been looked forward to by the Dunedin members, as they were so harmonious and happy, due largely to the very fine qualities of the chairman. He considered that there were very few towns so well served by a fire board or brigade as Oamaru. Mr Macdonald mentioned the fine co-operation of the two representatives from the board to the Oamaru Borough Council, Messrs J. M. Forrester and F. Crawshaw, who were eager to see that the brigade was properly equipped. The local brigade, under Superintendent Herron, was deserving of every support and assistance. MANCHESTER UNITY LOYAL NGAPARA LODGE The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Ngapara Lodge, which was held at Tokarahi on Saturday night, was exceptionally well attended, the occasion being the official visit from the Loyal Oamaru and Loyal Star of the North Lodges, and fraternal visits from other branches of the Otago District. N.G. Bro. E. Lory occupied the chair, and extended a very cordial welcome to the visiting sisters and brethren. He called on the officers of Loyal Oamaru Lodge to perform the initiation ceremony. Intimation regarding the Purple Degree lecture to be delivered* at the monthly meeting of the North Past Grands’ Lodge (Oamaru), on Tuesday was received, and several of the past officers signified their intention of attending. During the progress report on behalf of the sick and distressedLpf the Order, special mention was made of the illness of the permanent secretary (P.G. Bro. A. Murray), and best wishes expressed for his speedy recovery. The following replied on behalf of the visitors’ toast: —N.G. Bro. J. E. Meikle (Loyal Oamaru), conductor, Sister M. W. GENERAL NEWS Good entries have been received for the Waiareka sale to-morrow, including fat and store stock. Special entries will be brought forward by a southern client, and these will include a good line of Romney-Corriedale crossbred ewe hoggets, and also Cqrriedalc ewes. Further entries are invited. The Rugby football matches were postponed in Oamaru on Saturday on account of the large number of footballers and enthusiasts desiring to witness the second test match in Dunedin. Big contingents went from Oamaru on Friday night and Saturday morning, and generally keen interest was displayed in the big Rugby event. Two men’s hockey matches were played on Saturday afternoon. Rovers defeating Totara by eight goals to five, and Oamaru defeating Waimate B by 11 goals to 6. » In the early hours or-yesterday morning rain commenced to fall in Oamaru and surrounding districts, and up till 9 o’clock, when the rain abated, 28 points had been recorded by Mr William Forrester. There were one or two light showers during the day, and the sky remained overcast for the most part. PAPAKAIO LAWN TENNIS CLUB Mr H. Norton presided over a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Papakaio Lawn Tennis Club. 1 The annual report and balance sheet were adopted.
