DEPENDENCE ON DOLE.
RUINING THE NATION. CONDITIONS IN OLD COUNTRY. (Special to Daili Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 13. “The working classes in many parts of England and Scotland appear to be losing their independence, ,and to be content to subsist on the dole,” said Dr F. G. Gibson in an interview to-day, when speaking of his observations in the Old Country during die last few months. , “The younger men are the chief offenders in this respect,” he said, “and they are satisfied to depend on what they can obtain without working, particularly if it comes from the State. A generation has grown up which will not work if it can possiblv avoid it, and the _ economic system is in a very difficult position. Of course, the En'di'h workman is one of the best in the world if he is in employment, but it appears that the young men are not being absorbed.”
