COMMON GAMING-HOUSES.
THREE CHINESE FINED. TWO OLD OFFENDERS. (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, January 12. Two Chinese who admitted ha-ring ke|C common gaming houses in Taranaki street were fined £SO each by Messrs G. Anyon and A. Longmoore, justices of the peace, in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. They were Ngan Yuk, alias Ny Yok, aged 37, and Low Kum, aged 50. A penalty of £lO was imposed on Joe Chong who admitted having kept a common gaming-house in Earning street. Sub-inspector Harvey stated that the accused had been arrested as the result of a raid which was carried out on the evening of December 22. Ngan_Ynk had been before the court for a similar offence on two previous occasions, and was fined £4O on April 14 last. Low Kum who was also a third offender was fined £3O in May. Nothing was previously known against the accused. The Bench, in imposing the fines, said that it was impossible to take a lenient view of the cases. The men knew the law, and two of them had been previously fined. Default would be fixed at three months’ imprisonment in the case of Ngan Yuk and Low Kum, and at one month’s imprisonment in the cast of Joe Chong, and the three would be allowed one month in which to find the money.
