CITY POLICE COURT.

Monday. January 10. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) BREACH OF ORDER. James Richmond was convicted and fined ]ob and costs (7s) for procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, three weeks being allowed in which to find the money. BY-LAW CASES. For leaving a car unattended for more than 15 minutes in a public place Robert Charles Herron was fined 5s and costs (7s). Charged with allowingcattle to wander on the Highcliff road, William Waltersdorf was fined 6s and costs (7»). MAINTENANCE. Charged with disobedience of a maintenance order, the arrears on which amounted to £l2, Robert Ernest Powell was sentenced’to three months’ imprisonment, he to be released on payment of the arrears. A CARELESS DEALER. Percival Church, a licensed second hand dealer, pleaded guilty to having received from persons, apparently under the age' of 16 years, a bag and clothing valued at £2. —Senior Sergeant Quartermain stated that some boys had stolen the articles mentioned which had been bought by defendant for Is.—ln his defence. Church said that for a long time he had refused to buy anything from young boys, but on this occasion he had done so, as the lads had told him their parents had given them the goods to sell. From the state of the bag and its contents, which were fit only for the rag-mill, he saw no reason to doubt their statement. His profit when he sold the articles would have been about Zjd. The Magistrate said defendant should be more careful in future, and after warning him that another breach might cause.him to lose his license, his Worship dismissed the charge subject to payment of court costs (7s). OBSCENE EXPOSURE. William Patrick Nesbitt appeared on remand on a charge of having obscenely exposed his person in Bay View road on the night of January 7.—Mr A. G. Neill apneared for accused, who had previously pleaded guilty.—Mr Neill said that apparently accused had been indulging in liquor and did not understand properly what had happened. He suggested that he might be admitted to probation, as he was a married man and was in regular employment.— Senior Sergeant Quartermain said that Nesbitt’s employers gave a good report of him, and had expressed their willingness to take him back. —Mr Neill pointed out that accused had been injured in a quarry accident some years ago, which might have had some effect on his reason.—The Magistrate said it was evident that accused was of a low grade of intelligence, and admitted him to probation for three years, a. special condition being that ho should take out a prohibition order against himself. INSULTING LANGUAGE, James Gillan, who did not appear, was charged with having, on December 15, used insulting language to Evelyn fait in the hearing of passers-by.-Defendant forwarded a letter admitting his guilt and statintr that he was under the influence ot liquor at the time of the offence.-A fine of £4 10s, with 10s witness s expenses and court costs. (9s) was imposed, m default 14 days’ imprisonment.
