A SILVER BETTOR.
BOOKMAKER FINED £25. (Special to Daily Times. I AUCKLAND. January 10. William Doolan combined bookmaking with billiards with unsatisfactory results —to himself at all events. When charged before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning with carrying on the business of a bookmaker on January 7 he pleaded guilty. It was stated by Senior Detective Hammond that Doolan was a billiard marker and was in charge of the Star Billiard Saloon in Newton. .He had been betting in small amounts, and his largest ' üble was onlv one of £5 to half a crown. He was really a silver bettor, and only in a small way. “What have you got to say?” asked the Magistrate. Doolan told the magistrate that he had only tried to help things over the Christmas holidays. “Well, you people are sharp enough to know the risks you run. I won’t send you to gaol for this, but you will be fined £25,” said Mr Hunt.
