FROM THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." MONDAY, MAY 8. 1865. NEW ZEALAND EXHIBITION.
SIXTY YEARS AGO.
THE CLOSING CEREMONY. The New Zealand Exhibition was closed on Saturday. The weather was wet and ■unpleasant; but over 1400 visitors were present- <i, number which only once before had beep nearly reached. The -nembers of the Philharmonic Society, aided by Mrs Mumfcrd (Miss Julia Mathews) had volunteered their services; unci they sang a selection of music that would have been very effective, could it have been fairly heard. But on the closing day, and with so many visitors present, the groat majority of whom crowded into the central ha.ll, there was a stir which often marred the effect of the singing-; and the steadiness of the vocalists was all but upset during one piece by a bugler, who very discordantly sounded the "assembly" as a signal to the Volunteers present to form in order to receive His [lonor the Superintendent arid members of the R,oyal Commission. . . At four o'clock His Honor the Superintendent, the President, entered the Hall, accompanied by His Honor Mr Justice Richmond and the Honorable Major Richardson. Postmaster-General, etc., vicepresidents, and the following members of the Commission: —Dr Hector, Messrs R. S. Oantrell, John Cargill, H. Clapcott, R. B. Martin, and J. Vog-el. and Mr H. T. Morse, secretary.
