Sir James Mills arrived in Christchurch from Wellington by the ferry steamer on Tuesday morning. Mr Robert Henry Traill has been appointed caretaker of the Stewart Island Reserves and Sanctuaries, under tho control of the Lands and Survey Department

'The Sydney Sun newspaper (says a cable message) announces the engagement of Mr Justice Owen, of New ,South Wales, to Miss Hilda Chapman, daughter of Sir Frederick Chapman, of New Zealand. Messrs A. McM. Patterson, J. W. Todd, E. W. Flint, G. Marr, P. M'Kinlay, Mrs Bedford, and Miss MTvinlay left Dunedin yesterday to attend tho annual meeting of the New Zealand Alliance at Wellington.

At the monthly mooting of the Otago A. and P. Society the following new members were elected: —Messrs James Bain, A. Chambers, Wm. MTlugh, Wm. Ramsay, A. Bohvell, James Sinton, Foster and Higgenson, John Mitchell, Walter Dallas, Bert Sheddan, Anderson Bros., and M'Rae Bros.

Miss Mawhinney, who has been engaged as teacher at Dunback, was the recipient of a suit case from the residents the occasion of her removal to Oainaru North School. Fond of all sports and games, she took a great interest in the children at the Dunback School.

The late Mr Harry Wilson, who met his death as tho result of the unfortunate accident at Oainaru on Monday evening, was one of tho earliest settlers in North Otago. It was sixty-oim years igo when he arrived in Oaniaru. For a number of years ho was engaged in mining at Maerowhenua. At a mooting of householders held in the Dunback schoolhouse, the fallowing wore elected members of the school committee • --Messrs F. Campbell (chairman), A Purvis. R. Roberts, A. Chapman, and A. Parkhill (secretary). Out of no fowqr than 26 applicants Mr Ernest George, of Dunedin, has been appointed to the position of engineer-clerk to the Vincent, County Council. Mr George, who is 35 years of age, is a son of Mr G R. George' (secretary of (he Bluff Harbour Board for many years). Mr George served at the war and rose to the rank of lieutenant . , „ TT Messrs Jas. Wallace, J. Smith, J. Horn, M.P., R. T. Sanderson, G. W. Wood, &. m! Park, the Hon. D. T. Fleming (members of the Otago Education Board), Mr T. R. Fleming (senior inspector), and Mr J. Rodger (architect) left Dunedin yesterday morning for North Otago to inquire into the educational facilities in the Benmore and Omarama districts.
