DROUGHT IN AUSTRALIA
STOCK SUFFERING SEVERELY.
BAD OUTLOOK FOR FARMERS.
Pr««8 Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. rp. SYDNEY, August 1. The Sydney Morning Herald says that °™S k° failure in a large measure ot the usual winter rains, pastoralists and wlieat-growers regard the coming season's outlook as gloomy. In many places the pastures are bare, and the heavy frosts and cold are causing severe suffering and loss among the half-starved stock. The possibilities of a satisfactory wheat crop depend on the Tainfall in the next few weeks. In many districts the grass is already " browning off " owing to the drought, but the spring rains may brine the crops forward. . The only hopeful feature is a marked diminution of the rabbit pest as a result of the drought, and of the extensive operations of trappers, who are taking advantage of the high price of skins and the demand for carcases in view of the shortage of meat.
