SWIMMING ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF COUNCIL. (Put United Press Association.) CHRISTOHURCH, August 1. At a meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association tonight the following motion was carried:— "That the allocation of New Zealand championships shall tako place at the annual conferences of centres, such allocation to be for the next season. only following such annual conference." In reply to a letter from the Wellington centre, it was decided that the Lyall Bay Surf Club and all surf-bathing clubs were eligible for affiliation in the same manner as swimming clubs. Ladies' clubs could also affiliate. It was decided to hold up the allocation of the second prize in tho Wellington schools' championship (boys), pending satisfactory evidence being forthcoming as to the swimmer's age. A letter was read from Mr Gtcorge Heam (secretary of tho International Amateur Swimming Association), who stated that in his opinion a bath assistant or attendant would internationally bo considered a professional. Should he leave the employment, however, and tako up some other oocupation there -was no reason why ho should not be reinstated as an amateur. Tho Latter said the Amateur Swimming Association did not regard a bath manager as a professional if lie was employed only as a manager and not as an attendant on swimming. He considered that if the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association allowed bath attendants to compete as amateurs it at present disqualified the New Zealand swimmers from competing in other countries, and also at the -Olympic) games. At present the writer found it impossible to oa.fl a meeting of tho federation, as the feeling against enemy ctelegates would bo too bitter. Th.3 letter was receivd. .
