A TRAWLER FORFEITED
FISHING IN PROHIBITED WATERS. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 1. A cflarge of illicit trawling in Hauraki Gulf last month was admitted by John Gallagher (master of tha trawler Phantom) before Mr Wilson, S.M., to-day. Mr Selwyn Mays, for the Fisheries Department, stated that the defendant ■was fairly caught when he was trawling off the Noisy Islands and six miles inside the prohibited area in broad daylight. At the time of this offence one of the owners was on board. The master and owner had been caught poaching in the same ship in May. The only thing to b& said in their favour was that the boat was a small one, and that the defendants were trawling only in a small way. Though the fine for the offence was limited to £20, an application was made for an order of the forfeiture of the ship and gear, and the owners would have to treat with the Minister of Customs for their redemption.
The defendant was fined £8, and 28s costs, and an order was made for the forfeiture of the ship and gear.
