CABLE SYSTEMS

EXTENSIVE IMPROVEMENTS PROJECTED. INTENTIONS OF EASTERN EXTENSION COMPANY. Pr«i» Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, July 29. (Received Aug. 1, at 8.15 p.m.) The principal repairs to the cable systems have been completed, but the prewar transmissions to Australia will not be resumed until the Indo-European system, traversing South Russia, is restored. The Eastern Extension Cable Company is spending £3,000,000 in improving the system to Australia in view of the coming competition with wireless. A new cable will be laid at the earliest possible date from London, via Gibraltar, Malta, and Singapore, and possibly another line to Australia will be duplicated. High speed instruments will be installed, increasing the capacity of the existing cables. The Eastern Company hopes to be able to transmit direct from London to Adelaide with the speediest automatic instruments.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
