SOCIALS TO SOLDIERS
Tho Empire Girls' Group of the Overseas Olub lield one of its monthly danoes in the club's rooms on Wednesday evening, when about 60 returned soldiers took advantage of the invitation extended to them. This body of young ladies worked assiduously on behalf of the soldiers during the wax, and the members ana now devoting their efforts to tho entertainment of those who have come back, the result bjing a series of social evenings, co which ail returned soldiers are welcome. During the evening various competitions were held, into which all present entered with enthusiasm, and at intervals in the dancing Mise Carter sang very acceptably and Miss Leyland recited. The music for thi dances was supplied by Misses Reekie and Tonkin. Mr Chapman, of the Y.M.C.A., efficiently carried out the duties of M.C.
The Young Ladies' Committee of the Otago Soldiers' Club connected with the Y.M.C.A., tendered returned eoldic-rs a social and musical evening last night in tho Y.M.C.A. buildings. Tho first port of the programme was given in the Soldiers' Club room, and the second part in the gymnasium. There was a large attendance, and a most enjoyable time was spent. Miss Cowio was entrusted with the arranging of the programme, and her efforts were most successful. Songs wen* .given by Miss Morrison and Mr Alexander, a duet by tho Misses Cowie, and sketch by Mrs F. Fish, and a musical monologue by Miss Jacobs. In addition there was a coon dance, a fancy dress, and other competitions, a cigarette race, and various games, all of whieh were evidently greatly enjoyed bv the young folks present. Mr J. V. Hamna, secretary of the Soldiers' Club, addressing those present, said it was intended to have weesly socials, and the men would bo entertained by the representatives of various business firms churches, etc., assisted bv tho Social Committee connected with tho Soldiers' Club. He explained that the principal object of the socials was to link "up tho men, and show them the benefit of an influence which was not to bo found on the street. The policy of the Y.M.C.A. Soldiers' Chili was to keep tho returned men in touch with tho organisation, and to get them interested in its various activities. Among the depart irjents which the dub had at the discosnl of members were; Phvsieal. educational social, musical, sports, hospitality, and membership One of tho objects was +o spread thrr work, and show the men that they were endeavonrlng to carrv on the same bene ficent work which (he Y.M C..A carried on on the battlefields abroad.
