The Engineor 'reportedGno new culvert has been put in on Mitchell's road, i. ort Molyiioux, and two now culverts on Ulmton-Owaka road, near Mrs Turner's. ■J-ho bridge over the canal near Shaw's property had to be strengthened by driving six now piles. A traction engine went through tho Waitapclca bridge on Tweed's toad; I reported about 12 months ago that mm bridge was unsafe for heavy traffio. the bridge over tho canal at Mr Telford's is not safe for traction engines. Owing to the number of bridges that are unsafe for traction engines, it will bo necessary to have notices posted on all bridges that are unsafe for heavy traffic. Tho new Clydevale punt "will be finished and working" by the end of next week. Several planks had to be nut in tho Balolutha trqffic bridge to repair a few small holes. I Inspected the Riverside road complained of by Air Morris (Finegand). About 20 chains of ti • road have been scooped out, leaving a k .dway of about 14ft wide. The removal of the soil ,ctc,. has made the road almost imnassablo for traffic, and to a large extent deprived Mr Morris of protection from floods. —Tho Chairman said that the president of tho Otago Motor Club had tofd him that the club would provide signboards free of cost.—lt was agreed that each member provide a list of boards required to tho engineer.—lt was resolved that the Otanomomo Drainage Board be asked to repair tho damage done at Morris's property.—The report was adopted. COEKESrONDENCE. Tii?. Secretary of the Glut ha River Board notified that Mr C. F. Overton had tendered his resignation through leaving tho district. —Cr 11. Morrison was appointed to the vacancy. Tho Clerk of tlie Balelutha Borough Council wrote that he had been instructed to again make application to the council for assistance towards lighting the Balelutha traffic bridge.—Cr Edwards said ho was of the same opinion as when tho mutter was brought up before. If the council wonted better lighting it should provide it. On his motion the letter was reoeived. John M'Kenaia and 13 other ratepayers in the Clydevale district petitioned tho council asking that the road from Mr M'Kenzie's to the Lower Pomahaka bridgo be opened and made fit for traffic, and arrang,3ments be made with Mr D. Murray for tho exchange of land for the road if required.—The work to bo carried out; cost not to exceed £100. ll.' T. Bryant, owa.ka, wrote asking for four chains of metal or rotten rock on the Craig-Rankin road, Owaka Valley, from tha winter's gate to the Main road. He was willing to do what ho could to help in the way of quarrying the metal, and also to give tho metal free.—The writer's offer was accepted, the work to be carried out as soon as possible. W. Richardson and four other ratepayers on the Owaka Valley fide of Morris's Saddle road petitioned for the council to apply for a Government grant of £500 to metal 70 chains of road between sections 28 and 61, block I, Catlins Survey District.—Tho Minister of Public Works (per Mr Malcolm, M.P.) wrote in regard to tlie application that the request) would receive consideration when tho Estimates wero being prepared.—Received. James Jenkins (Kelso) wrote regarding the gravelling contract of 20 chains on tho Middle road, which was finished on March 13, and for which ho had not received payment. —Hold over owing to absence of member for riding. Samuel White (Waikaka Valley) drew attention to tho very unsatisfactory state of tho road opposite his gate.—Held over. Agnes and Ivy Landreth (Katea) wroto drawing attention to the condition of ffiatherwood's road, which was almost impassable, especially at Ghisholm's Ilill.— Work being attended to. Charles Johnston, road overseer, Public Works Department, Kahuika, wroto regardingiwork at Catlins bridgo at llouipai>a, asktftg for tho use of tho council's stonecrushcr. —Granted freo of royalty, provided a. county employeo take charge of it, and it bo kept in order. 11. J. Gibbs (Houipapa) wrote drawing attention to the rough and uneven state of tho upper part of the hill on the road leading from Houipapa to Kahuika from tho saddle to his place.—Referred to the Public Works Department. 11. Iv. Edie, Secretary of the Clutka Valley Railway Leagua, wrote stating that tho Minister of Public Works had been asked to replace the punt at Tuapeka Mouth with a bridge. The league desired tha support of the council ,in the matter. It was resolved that tho request bo supported, provided it did not affect the erection of a bridgo at Clydevale. J. D. Edgar (Tapanui) wroto -with others, he had been watching the reports of the council for some months now with tho expectation of seeing some progress in connection with having a bridgo erected at Twe'edie's Ford.—The Engineer said it was impossible to obtain material by the railway at present.—The writer to be informed accordingly. 11. Snushall (Clydevale) wrote drawing attention to the state of the road to his house.—Engineer to have six chains of metal laid near the homestead. Geo. Wilson (Warepa) wrote drawing the council's attention to the state of tho road he wrote about three months ago.—On Cr Christie's motion it was resolved that Mr Roberts he sent a statutory notice in regard to clearing the gorso off tho road. R. Hutton (Rosebank} Awroto drawing the attention of tho council to a danger that existed on tho Rosebank hill to pedestrians owing to there being no side track for foot passengers.—Tho matter to bo referred to the engineer and tho mover to report to next meeting. H. G. Hunt and nine other ratepayers in the Clydevale-Pomahaka Ridings requested tho council to favourably consider tho metalling of the Clin ton-Clyde vale road lying between tho Clinton-Pomahaka and the Olydevale-Wharetoa roads. They asked £200 for tho work.—Application to bo made accordingly. James Lillie (Rosebank) wrote drawin" attention to the open culvert leading from his property under the railway into tho river, causing water from the river to flood back into his property.--Cr Christie said no responsibility could bo accepted.—Tho letter was received. W. 11. Cock wroto stating that he purposed erecting a fence on section 19, block VIII, Catlins district, for about 15 chains and would be agreeable to cut and burn scrub growing 'between the present fenced road and tho boundary of tho above station for 3s per chain.—Accepted, work to bs done to tho satisfaction of the engineer. GENERAL. It was resolved that the wages of tho surfacemen bo paid for peace holidaysSaturday and Monday. In regard to business held over from previous meetings, A. 'Campbell's application for tramline was granted during the of the council. In regard to A O. Kerr's application, no action was taken A report from the committee of the proposed hospital district was received. Tho four members appointed outside representatives of public bodies were Messrs J Mnslnv A. M'Neil, W. S. Maslin, and A.' S. Malcolm. Three delegates were required from the -County Council. It was also requested that the council pass a resolution urgin" the representative in Parliament to support a Bill for a separate hospital district.—Cr North said that it was proposed to address meetings in tho Waipahi and Glenkenich' Ridings in regard to the projwsed district, and on his motion the appointment of representatives was held over. A resolution in regard to requesting .the member to support tiio Bill was passed.
