Mr W. T. Young, general secretary of the New • Zealand Seamen's Union,' arrived in Dunodia from Wellington on Saturday night. Mr T. R. Procter, tho local manager of Messrs Turnbull and Jones, has been transferred to the management of the Wellington office. Cable advice has been received by Mr W. •H. Ferens, of York place, that his son, Corporal Ledlie S. Ferens, is returning to New Zealand by 'the Athenic, which is due to arrive on or about Agitust 23. Advice has been received by Mr James Stewart, of Kaikorai, that his son, Staffsergeant J. Bremner Stewart, is due to arrive by .the Giessen at Wellington about A"P st 2 - Sergeant Stewart volunteered in 1915, and has been on the west front up to the last. Captain William Austin, second son of Mr and Mrs Wm. Austin, Highgate, Roslyn, is returning to New Zealand by the Ulimaroa. Captain Austin, who went away with the Main Body, Mounted Rifles, will on his return have five years' continuous service in Egypt, Gallipoli, New Zealand, and Palestine. On Thursday evening last Mr K A Saunders, son of the Rev. W. A. Saunders, of this city, who is proceeding to Oxford University in a few days to complete his studies, was presented with a travelling rug by the past and present teachers of the Moray Flace Congregational Sunday School of which he has been organist and a teacher for a good many years. Mr Saunders passed through the Otago Boys' High School, and is a graduate of Otago University; and for the last two years has been acting as lec-
turer in Greek both at Knox College and at the University. In both places he was very popular on account of his high literary and musical abilities, and his career at Home ™ 4? Uowed , b 5 a c ' ac]e o f friends. Mr Thomas White, one of the early settlers of Waikouaiti, passed away on the 18th_inst .in his eightieth year. He came to New Zealand as a young man, arriving by the ship Jura on September 22, 1858. At the first land sale held in Waikouaiti in 1865 ho purchased a and in that vicinity ever since. For many years he took an 'active part in carrying on the agricultural show at Waikouaiti. The late Mr White was-much respected by all who knew him. He is- survived bv his widow, sons, and daughters. It is announced that Mr 'John Brander of SSF TV 1 "! P° sition of secretary of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., m London, and that Mr George. M. Reid has been at>pointed to •succeed him. Mr Brander's" connection with the company extends over a period exceeding 40 years, and he has held the post of secretary for about 25 years. . Sydney James, news of whose death m India was recently recorded, was a remarkably versatile performer, whose talent nas amused many thousands in New Zea land. He was the mainstay of the Strollers a costume comedy company which first visited Wellington in 1916, ana , returned again in May, 1913, when they presented a, revue of sorts entitled "Como inside, m which Mr James gave rein to his many admirable qualities as a comedian . tie was a wonderfully good ventriloquist' and his dummy, "Billy," became a real personality under the influence of Mr James s deft manipulations, vocal and otherwise. Ho was also a capable mummer, and will be well remembered for his burlesque on *Peg o' My Heart" and his ludicrous nightwatehman sketch in "Come Inside." Mr James was extremely popular in his' profession.
